Department of Mathematics at Valley City State University is seeking a full time Mathematics Education Tenure-Track faculty position.

The candidate selected will be expected to teach face-to-face on the VCSU campus.

The primary responsibility of this position will be to teach undergraduate mathematics courses in the VCSU Mathematics Education degree program, as well as the VCSU General Education program. This position will also provide academic advising while working closely with local partner k-12 school administrators and teachers concerning practicum and student teaching placement/supervision for Mathematics Education teacher candidates. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain and update course/program curricular content aligned to North Dakota teacher licensure rules, state mathematics content standards, and national teacher education accreditation standards. The successful candidate will also participate in departmental assessment and recruiting efforts, contribute to campus committees, and perform other activities as needed.

Other duties may include:

  • Teaching mathematics coursework in the VCSU Elementary Education program and/or VCSU Graduate School.

  • Development and/or teaching of online mathematics courses.

  • Engaging in appropriate service in the department, university, and academic community.

  • Participating in professional development in mathematics education pedagogy, staying current with relevant course content, and working to improve student learning and engagement.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or closely related area such as education curriculum and instruction (with a minimum of 18 credits of graduate level Mathematics).

  • Minimum of three years of full-time middle/high school mathematics teaching experience with preference given to applicants whose experience demonstrates familiarity with the following:

    •  North Dakota teacher licensure rules

    •  North Dakota state mathematics content standards

    •  Current pedagogical and administrative trends and strategies typically present in North Dakota k-12 schools.

  • Ability to work with others in a collegial and collaborative manner.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or related field.

  • Prior experience in teaching at the university-level.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with the use of technology in the classroom and experience teaching in the online format using a Learning Management System (LMS) such as Blackboard or Moodle.

  • Experience in academic advising of students.

  • Experience with student recruitment efforts and/or activities.

  • Experience giving professional development presentations or record of published research.


The salary for this position is commensurate with qualifications and experience, typically starting at $45,000 annually (instructor rank). In some cases, summer duties may be arranged through an additional contract for additional compensation.
