General Description
Under the direction of the Director, Financial Aid, the Work Study Specialist will facilitate the placement of Work Study Students into temporary, subsidized employment and act as a liaison between departments on and off campus regarding the Work Study Program.
This is a full-time 12-month position.
Monday - Friday, 7:45 a.m. - 4:45 p.m. Initial salary placement is at $67,122

Job Duties
Job duties of the Work Study Specialist:
- Coordinate with the Financial Aid Department regarding the awarding of Federal Title IV and CalWorks/TANF Work Study funds.
- Coordinate with the Welfare Reform Program Coordinator regarding placement of CalWorks students.
- Negotiate Federal, Cal Works and State Work Study agreements throughout the community for student placement in the public/private sector.
- Conduct bi-annual site visits to off campus work-sites to verify compliance with negotiated agreements and compliance with Federal and State employment laws.
- Receive and process job orders from on- and off-campus supervisors for student aides.
- Communicate with students regarding Federal Work Study, State Work Study and CalWorks grants.
- Interview work study student job applicants, screen them for appropriate job skills, and refer them to available work study positions.
- Act as a liaison with off-campus and on-campus employers.
- Counsel students on job placement and work related issues.
- Counsel/Advise student worker supervisors on techniques to improve student employment success.
- Conduct Work Study Sessions to describe the Work Study Programs and to teach students proper interviewing techniques and effective resume writing skills.
- Maintain a system of monitoring student work study earnings utilizing various database programs.
- Utilize District integrated software programs as appropriate for position.
- Maintain Student Employment Handbook.
- Participate in meetings pertaining to the Work Study programs and Financial Aid.
- Process payroll forms and work study files for students employed by work study programs, review and authorize monthly timesheets and monitor student evaluations.
- Coordinate with CWEE (Corporate Work Experience Education) and Welfare Reform Program Coordinators regarding off-campus Title IV work study positions.
- Provide job placement assistance to non-work study students as needed.
- Compose correspondences and perform miscellaneous administrative duties to efficiently maintain the Work Study programs/budgets.
- Compile, analyze and summarize data for monthly and annual budget reports.
- Utilize the District's integrated software in performing the required duties of the position.
- Assist during peak periods in processing financial aid documents and ISIRs.
- Participate in Financial outreach events, when needed.
- Perform other related duties as needed.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience)
Any combination equivalent to:
- Associate's degree and
- Three years of increasingly responsible clerical/accounting experience. Experience with governmental programs which provide financial assistance and/or services to students is preferred.
- One year of accounting clerical experience involving payroll, financial or statistical record-keeping.

- Operate a variety of standard office equipment including a computer workstation, typewriter, calculator, Scranton and use a wide variety of related integrated software.
- Compile data and prepare written reports, correspondence and related materials using proper English.
- Understand and follow oral and written directions.

- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
- Provide work direction and guidance to student employees.
