Experimental Quantum Materials Research

The Center for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing (CAMM) at the University of Tennessee is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who can work at the interface of experimental Condensed Matter Physics, Materials Science, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). CAMM is a newly funded NSF Materials Research Science and Engineering Research Center (MRSEC) that focusses on two major initiatives: using AI to tame the complexity of quantum materials, and building new materials that can operate in extreme conditions.

The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing AI-assisted methodologies in epitaxial thin film synthesis and data analysis of topological and/or superconducting quantum materials. Opportunities exist to broaden their professional portfolio with in-situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and (angle-resolved) photoemission experiments, and ex-situ physical property measurements. They will have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty, postdoctoral associates, and students from various disciplines including Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Qualifications

 

Desired Qualifications:

●        PhD required, preferably in Physics or a related discipline.

●        A strong publication and research record.

●       Extensive research experience in molecular beam epitaxy. Additional expertise in scanning tunneling microscopy, photoemission,         transport and/or magnetometry is desirable.

●       Strong communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative team environment.

●        Additional research experience in areas that support the center’s Artificial Intelligence mission including, but not limited to:

• •        Automation, active and reinforcement learning.
  •        Material informatics and data-driven approaches for materials discovery and device design, including machine learning methods.

Candidates with experience in more than one discipline, or interest in collaboration across these disciplines, are preferred. However, candidates who can define a unique research area are also encouraged to apply.

Salary will be determined commensurate with experience. Benefits will be typical of those of exempt employees at the University of Tennessee.  Some funds are available to outfit computational resources and a travel budget is also available.
