Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Academic Advisor for Cameron School of Business serves to give comprehensive guidance to advisees in matters pertaining to the successful completion of their academic degree programs. This position serves student populations enrolled in Cameron programs at the main UNCW campus as well as the Onslow extension campus.

Under the supervision of the Director of the Cameron Advising Center, the Academic Advisor is responsible for providing advising consultations and related programming and services for select populations of undergraduate students in the Cameron School of Business, both on main campus and the Onslow extension campus.

Minimum Requirements

Master’s in Business Administration, Psychology, Student Affairs, Counseling or related field.

List the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential functions of the position

Attention to detail, task orientation and the ability to work collaboratively as well as independently to achieve institutional goals and objectives is expected. Proficiency with various computer applications, Microsoft Office, and web technology are essential skills. Occasional evening and weekend work is rare, but may be necessary.

Preferred formal education, professional skills and work experience

A Master’s degree in business, student development, higher education, or related field is required and 1-2 years of advising experience, student counseling, or student services support at an academic institution is required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to demonstrate tact, diplomacy and maintain a high level of confidentiality are required. Academic advising of undergraduate level business students is highly desirable along with Banner proficiency.

The ideal candidate will possess polished interpersonal communication skills, counseling skills, and have experience in advising within a higher education setting, preferably in another AACSB accredited business school. The candidate should demonstrate a professional demeanor that establishes credibility quickly, inspires confidence and builds positive relationships. Outstanding presentation skills that enable effective, influential communication with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and alumni is vital to this position.

The Cameron School of Business is a fully AACSB accredited business school with a leading position among regional public universities.
