The Department of Chemistry at the University of Virginia invites applications for a Research Scientist, who is excited about the opportunity to work in a dynamic and collaborative research environment.   This position will be in the lab of Professor Marcos Pires.

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work as part of a team of scientists to design and synthesize small molecules, peptides, or express proteins that label live bacterial cells. The focus is primarily on synthetic components and analysis in bacterial cells. Research duties will include protein expression and purification from bacteria and subsequent modification (bioconjugation) and peptide synthesis in solution phase and/or solid phase. Responsibilities may include bacterial cell-based assay development and optimization, elucidation of biologically relevant targets/mechanisms of action, flow cytometry analysis, and confocal microscopy. Postdoctoral Research Associate will publish their findings in high impact, peer-reviewed journals and be co-inventors on patents related to their work.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: A Ph.D. degree in Chemistry or a related discipline is required by the appointment start date.  The candidate must have effective oral and written communication skills.  The candidate must have a working knowledge of biochemical and molecular biological laboratory procedures, and should have expertise in the expression and purification of SNAREs or related proteins.  The candidate is also expected to have expertise in magnetic resonance spectroscopy, with a familiarity of EPR spectroscopy and modern pulse EPR instrumentation.  The successful candidate is also expected to help mentor undergraduates and graduate students in the laboratory.
