GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The RoboticsLab at Illinois Tech, led by Prof. Matthew Spenko, is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral scholar to conduct research for a 15-month project. The postdoc will work closely with Starfish Space, our collaborator, on a Space Force-funded project aimed at developing a universally compatible, non-destructive capture system for in-space docking in all orbits. Specifically, the postdoc will be responsible for the development of grippers that utilize gecko-like and hybrid gecko-like/electrostatic adhesion.

Qualifications


Education & Experience
Requirements:
  • Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, robotics, mechatronic engineering, or a related field
Knowledge & Skills
Requirements:
  • Strong background in experimental aspects of mechatronic design
  • Detailed understanding of mechatronic/robotic hardware
  • Excellent academic writing, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • History of mentoring students
  • Record of strong scholarly output in the form of peer-reviewed publications or patents

Preferred Skills:
  • Experience with gecko-like, dry, electrostatic, and/or other controllable adhesives
  • Familiarity with space-hardware
  • Proficiency in embedded electronic design
