Job Description Summary

The program director is a physical therapist who demonstrates an understanding of education and contemporary clinical practice appropriate for leadership in physical therapist assistant education. The Program Director is the Core Faculty member who is designated as and has responsibility for the management of the PTA program and is responsible for maintaining program accreditation. The faculty member who serves in this capacity is an employee of Del Mar College and is assigned to teach at Del Mar College by providing instruction for PTA courses. The instructor-director is expected to provide a professional climate to maximize learning opportunities for the students of the physical therapist assistant program.

Required Job Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Didactic and/or clinical teaching experience.

Experience in administration/management.

Experience in educational theory and methodology, instructional design, student evaluation and outcome assessment, including the equivalent of nine (9) credits of coursework in educational foundations.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree.

Current license as a Physical Therapist in Texas, or eligible for Texas licensure.

Five (5) years, full-time, post licensure experience that includes a minimum of three (3) years of full-time, clinical experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong communication, organizational, interpersonal, problem-solving, and counseling skills.

Ability to use technology for teaching and learning.

Clinical experience in neurology.

Member of the American Physical Therapy Association with documented professional activity.

Maintain records of the students who apply for admission to the PTA program.

Develop and revise criteria as needed for selection of students into the program.

Recruit, screen and interview all students interested in the program and ensure equal opportunity for all applicants.

Maintain all program records, to include: Program Assessment; Self-Study; Correspondence; Student Records.

Maintain program accreditation including reports of substantive changes, progress reports, and reaffirmation of accreditation documents.

Supervise program faculty and instruction.

Teaching Entry-Level Program

Organize, coordinate and incorporate a PTA curriculum within the college.

Aid in the development of significant new and current clinical affiliations for clinical education of the students engaged in the study of PTA at Del Mar College.

Make the necessary changes in program requirement and curriculum to reflect the changes that occur in the practice of physical therapy.

Develop lesson plans, select audiovisual materials and textbooks and design methods of evaluation for all courses of the program.

Plan, in advance, needed supplies, textbooks, and classroom equipment required for the successful teaching of all courses of the program.

Meet all classes promptly unless advance arrangements are made with the Department Chairperson.

Keep accurate record and submit all reports as required by the institution.

Evaluate students periodically and give final examinations as scheduled by the college.

Observe and attend to bulletins, announcements and regulations as issued by the administration.

Secure authorization for instructional trips.
Prepare students who are eligible to take the licensure examination.

Visit the clinical education centers on a regular basis.

Communicate with clinical instructors to facilitate appropriate student clinical education.

Participate in activities designed to market the program to interested and potential applicants.

Maintain and update teaching physical therapy skills through continuing education and professional development activities.

Communicate with other divisions and departments of the institution for efficient and accurate student access of campus resources.

Work directly with the Departmental Chairperson of Allied Health relative to each of the above.
