Summary Description

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist position in the Rock and Ice Mechanics Laboratory within the Seismology, Geology and Tectonophysics Department.
This position will focus on experimental ice physics, with application to glacier flow and moons of the outer solar system. An ambient-pressure cryogenic apparatus will be used to run experiments that will range from creep and attenuation to fatigue, friction, or fracture, depending on the project. Experience running experiments and characterizing deformation microstructures and grain-scale processes is required. Experience dealing with cryogenic cooling systems is a plus.

Minimum Degree Required

Ph.D. in in Geosciences, Engineering, Physics or a related discipline.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates should have recently completed or be nearing completion of a PhD in Geosciences, Engineering, Physics or a related discipline and demonstrated competence in running laboratory experiments. Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills, and ability to use independent judgment are required. Evidence of an ability to conduct and publish high-quality research is required.

Additional Information

Proposed start date is November 1, 2019, with some flexibility. Appointments will be for one year, with continuation dependent on funding and progress.
