The Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia invites applications for a teaching-track faculty position in Communication (Ph.D. preferred, open professorial rank available, non-tenure track) for the 2020-21 academic year.
The Communication faculty at Darden seek an engaged colleague who is uniquely prepared to join a team dedicated to transforming the way Communication is taught and learned in business education. All faculty in the Communication (COM) area teach in a required core course, Leadership Communication (Residential MBA, Executive MBA, and Master of Business Analytics Programs). The abilities to lead a discussion-based and experiential course, work collaboratively with a faculty team to design and deliver a common syllabus, and model leadership communication in the classroom and the school are essential.
This appointment requires teaching a five-course load each year, writing cases and curriculum materials for internal and external use, and actively serving the Communication area and the Darden School. In addition to teaching up to two sections of the required Leadership Communication course, COM area faculty teach three electives. Existing elective courses include: advanced leadership communication; interpersonal communication; strategic communication; and corporate communication.
New electives also may be developed to include topics that appeal to unmet student and recruiter interests, such as: communicating to promote diversity, inclusion and belonging, especially in global contexts; visualizing and communicating data; communicating in impromptu and improvisational situations; mastering current and emerging communication platforms and technologies; negotiating and transforming conflict. Additional opportunities to teach abroad in one-week Global Immersion Courses are also possible.
The Communication area supports the Darden School’s mission “to improve the world by inspiring responsible leaders through transformational learning experiences.” In addition to teaching courses in Darden degree programs, Darden faculty are expected and encouraged to engage actively with business practitioners. Engagement may take the form of participating in the Communication area’s Darden Leadership Communication Council and additional teaching in Darden’s Executive Education programs. Communication area faculty are also encouraged to maintain active professional ties through academic conferences and to generate and share new knowledge, especially related to teaching and learning.
Applicants with a Ph.D. in Communication or a related discipline are preferred. Applicants with strong practitioner experience and evidence of teaching excellence will be considered. This position is open rank. Faculty with a doctoral-level degree are appointed with a professorial rank – assistant, associate, and full professor. This appointment falls under well-developed University of Virginia guidelines on “Academic General Faculty – Teaching Track .” Initial appointments will usually be for a three-year term and will follow the University of Virginia and the Darden School’s guidelines for peer review, renewal, and promotion opportunities.
Regularly ranked in the US and internationally among top schools in MBA and Executive Education , the Darden School’s culture values exceptional faculty who make outstanding classroom teachers.
