Purpose of Position
The Department of Physics, Computer Science and Engineering at Christopher Newport University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in Experimental Nuclear Physics. We are seeking a highly motivated candidate to carry out the research program at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). The group has research interests in nucleon structure, the strong interaction, applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning in experimental simulation and data analysis, developing streaming readout systems and other novel detector systems. The group is involved in a number of projects in Halls A, B and C at JLab.
The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for the group contribution to the SBS experimental program in Hall A. Opportunities to develop new experiment proposals and engage in data analysis of experimental data are also anticipated.
This position requires a strong background in nuclear physics, experimental physics techniques, and a high level of understanding and experience in detector work. The successful candidate will also be expected to work with and mentor CNU undergraduate and graduate students who are engaged in JLab research with the group.
The successful candidate will be based full time at JLab. The position will be for one year; however, the appointment may be renewed for an additional two, one-year increments, contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance.
Required Education:
  • A PhD in experimental nuclear or particle physics is required at the time the appointment begins.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Data analysis of nuclear and particle physics experiments
  • Experience with hardware
  • Programming experience in Python/C++
  • A strong desire to learn and to be able to guide graduate and undergraduate students in research on a daily basis.
Departmental Information
The Department of Physics, Computer Science & Engineering at Christopher Newport University employs 32 full-time faculty and staff who collaborate closely across the disciplines. Together we offer six undergraduate majors and a Master’s program with a total of about 560 students. The Department has a variety of laboratories in support of both teaching and research in cybersecurity, high-speed data acquisition, complex data analysis and simulation, communications, networking, robotics, and software engineering.
