Laboratory Supervisor
Job Description
This postion provides general supervison for assigned staff to ensure daily technical operations, achieve and comply with established operating budget, quality control, procedural, equipment, inventory management and regulatory standards under the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. This position performs general, routine, and complex histologic functions, histochemical and immunohistochemical testing, as well as highly complex, advanced histologic assay development, optimization, and validation according to clearly prescribed procedures and laboratory techniques or developmental methods. This position receives managerial review of completed work activities from the Anatomic Pathology manager. This position supervises laboratory staff.
Position Duties
- Develops, implements, maintains and upholds departmental policies and procedures to validate current practice requirements in support of overall organizational values and mission.
- Develops, implements, maintains and ensures adherence to accreditation and regulatory guidelines, professional standards, and industry standard of care practices for improved patient results and optimization of laboratory quality.
- Maintains professional and technical competency in all aspects of histology laboratory technology through constantly pursuing knowledge and self-improvement and remaining apprised of current trends, developments and awareness of latest technology and practices to improve outcomes.
- Functions as the area technical expert and acts as a resource for assigned staff to ensure achievement of established goals, objectives, and outcomes; performs patient testing, quality control testing, and instrument maintenance procedures to ensure ongoing compliance with policies, regulations, and safety guidelines for safe work practices.
- Responsible for daily technical operations of the histology laboratory by monitoring quality and effectiveness of workflow, problem resolution and trouble shooting issues, and/or processes to ensure optimum efficiency; oversees the adequate maintenance of inventory levels; maintains reagent quality, effectiveness, and useful life; and orders and stocks supplies as appropriate.
- Oversees and evaluates employee activities, behavioral and job performance, and professional competency of employees in the histology laboratory and tissue biorepository; provides guidance, mentoring, and direction as appropriate for ongoing staff development.
- Participates in hospital and department operational and quality improvement initiatives; proactively evaluates systems, practices, and assists create and implement changes to increase and enhance the effectiveness of the operations. Also, participates in organizational committees as pertinent.
- Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
