POSITION OVERVIEW:

Behind the Badge Foundation provides comprehensive support to Washington State’s law enforcement agencies, families and communities after an officer has died or suffered serious injury in the line of duty. Because we have walked in their shoes, we bring compassion and understanding to those rocked by tragedy.  We are dedicated to ensuring that law enforcement families and agencies are treated with respect and dignity, and that they receive the highest quality, compassionate trauma-care services.

The Program Specialist will develop and maintain relationships with survivors of law enforcement line of duty and duty related death. The ability to foster these connections in a supportive, authentic, yet professional way is a core component of the Program Specialist position.

The Program Specialist will work with compassion and empathy, using trauma-informed care to serve those who are served by the Foundation. The ideal candidate will have a desire to serve the law enforcement community, their families, and survivors of line of duty and duty-related* death. They would also have a working knowledge of trauma-informed care, outstanding organizational skills, event planning experience and creativity to further the already robust programs of Behind the Badge Foundation. Applicants should be highly committed to the Foundation’s mission.

The Program Specialist will assist the Programs and Services Director in the continued development and implementation of the Foundation’s programs to survivors, law enforcement officers, their families and agencies. This position works within the major programs of Behind the Badge Foundation, which may include but not be limited to, law enforcement survivor support, law enforcement agency support, the Law Enforcement Family Network, injured officers, the Washington State Law Enforcement Memorial, the Line of Duty Death Response Team, and various training programs.

This position reports to the Program/Services Director and will be expected to partner with other team members to accomplish the goals of the programs and services of the Foundation.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Represent Behind the Badge Foundation in a professional and compassionate manner to support surviving family members, agencies, law enforcement officers and their families across Washington State

- Curate and maintain up-to-date resources for survivors, officers, and family members of law enforcement

  • Vetting of qualified, available, culturally competent grief, trauma and law enforcement therapists and other providers
  • Understand local, state, federal and other resources and/or benefits available because of a line of duty death or catastrophic injury
  • Curate educational and supportive resources for those the Foundation serves and disseminate across multiple platforms, including through developed interpersonal relationships

- Maintain detailed calendars for ongoing planning, outreach and support of those the Foundation serves

- Provide outreach and support to law enforcement families and agencies impacted by trauma and/or the law enforcement profession

- Plan and implement regular social and resource events for survivors of line of duty and duty-related* death

  • Work in partnership with contractors and volunteers to develop creative events engaging a variety of survivors
  • Create and disseminate appropriate digital and printed content across multiple platforms

- Logistical support for Foundation programs/services/events

  • Hotel/flight arrangements
  • Venue search (survivor social events, training events, etc.)
  • Vendor research for various programs/services needs (ie: survivor social events, training events, Peace Officers' Memorial, etc)

- Develop/deliver presentations for Foundation programs

  • Survivor events (grief, trauma, healing, growth)
  • Law Enforcement Family Network (specific to grief, trauma, law enforcement)
  • Officer/family wellness topics (emphasis on survivor wellness and growth)

- Attend Behind the Badge Foundation events as directed

- Function both autonomously and cooperatively with team members, volunteers and those served by the Foundation to accomplish tasks, meet goals and further the mission of the Foundation

- Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

- Either

  • A bachelor’s degree in a field relevant to serving those served by the Foundation (with an emphasis on grief, trauma, trauma-informed care, law enforcement);

OR

  • A comparable combination of experience, education, and training (life and/or work experience will be strongly considered)

- Must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of grief and trauma issues (preference may be given if this relates to the law enforcement profession and community) – specifically trauma informed care

- Exceptional interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written)

- Excellent project management and organizational skills

- Competency with Microsoft Office 365 (Excel, Power Point, Word, Teams, etc)

- Friendly and inclusive demeanor during all interactions with internal and/or external partners, agencies, and the public and those served by the Foundation

  • High integrity and character
  • Exceptional understanding of and adherence to a strict policy of confidentiality

  • Independent problem solver and adaptable to change

DESIRED SKILLS:

- Employment, experience and/or training in trauma services, law enforcement, emergency services, emergency management or other similar fields

- Event planning experience

- Understanding of and/or experience with group travel planning

- Volunteer coordination

- Familiarity of the law enforcement profession and/or culture

OTHER:

- Must comply with Behind the Badge Foundation requirements of strict confidentiality, professional ethics and Foundation policies, procedures, and practices

- This position is an at-will employment position terminable by either the employee or the employer at any time for any reason

- Employment will be reviewed in no more than one (1) year to gauge the individual’s abilities and Behind the Badge Foundation's organizational needs.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Dependable automobile, valid car insurance, and valid driver’s license

Washington State Patrol background check and Department of Motor Vehicle driver’s license check

COMPENSATION:

Salary Range: $27-32 per hour
