The Institute for Modeling Collaboration and Innovation is a multidisciplinary, collaborative, Level III institute with a goal to foster the convergence of research around modeling. 50% of the position works in concert with Principal Investigators and the Office of Sponsored Programs to effectively submit competitive grant proposals. 50% of the position processes a variety of financial transactions, compiles data and generates routine and ad hoc financial reports and maintains records.
Position Overview
Responsible for providing complex technical support for daily financial operations by performing a variety of tasks following policies and procedures. In addition to processing a variety of financial transactions and maintaining records, the position compiles data and generates routine and ad hoc financial reports.
Duties may include:
  • Purchasing identified goods and services
  • Submitting invoices and receipts for payment
  • Accepting and recording payments
  • Reconciling purchasing card statements
  • Processing travel claims and reimbursements
  • Tracking transactions through completion in the centralized financial system
  • Filing and maintaining unit-level finance documents
  • Originating personnel actions and processing corrections to pay in the centralized financial system
  • Developing, compiling, and summarizing data for routine reports and ad hoc financial management reports
  • Researching and correcting discrepancies or errors
  • Providing assistance to departments on questions related to invoices, receipts, financial reports and other transactions
  • Researching, analyzing, and making recommendations for management decision making
  • Serving as departmental grant administrator, assisting principal investigator with pre- and post-award financial activities. May participate in budget development and compilation and submission of proposals and project reports
  • Other duties as assigned

The Institute for Modeling Collaboration and Innovation (IMCI) is a multidisciplinary, collaborative unit with a goal to foster the convergence of research around modeling. It reports directly to the Office of Research and Economic Development. It strives to create an intellectual, cultural, and physical environment that fosters synergy and promote modeling-based research at the University. A key feature of IMCI is the Modeling Core: a unique group of talented postdoctoral researchers with diverse modeling skills. These postdocs provide modeling services to the community as part of Modeling Access Grants (MAGs). The central idea behind the Modeling Core is that when a group of bright, skilled people share ideas about each other’s work, it will generate stronger, more innovative research. Current areas of expertise include mathematical modeling, statistical modeling, geospatial modeling, and machine learning.

Position Qualifications


Required Experience
  • Three years providing financial processing support within an electronic finance system.
  • Using spreadsheet software to compile, summarize, analyze, and report on financial data.
  • Interpreting and applying financial stewardship policies, procedures, rules and regulations.

Required Education
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Required Other
Additional Preferred
Experience with:
  • Analyzing information, identifying problems, defining alternatives, and developing recommendations for management/administrators.
  • Using accounting and financial management principles.
  • Interpreting, applying and explaining policies and procedures or rules and regulations.
  • Working in an institution of higher education.
  • Developing budgets and reconciling accounts.
  • Fostering cooperation among various levels of an organization, such as researchers, central administration and grant management teams.
  • Using time management skills to meet critical deadlines.
  • Using computer software and application for word processing, email, internet searches and data organization.
  • Supporting proposal development or submission.
  • Using electronic proposal submission systems (such as Research.gov, Grants.gov, VERAS).
