The Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology has an exciting opportunity for a Full-Time Post-Doctoral Scholar to study innate immune regulation in the intestine with a focus on the role of TLR4 signaling in colonic neoplasia. This laboratory is under the direction of Dr. Maria Abreu located on the Medical Campus. Animal models, human tissues, and in vitro systems are used to examine the molecular regulation innate immune receptors in health and disease, especially inflammatory bowel diseases. The laboratory is also interested in the intersection between innate immunity, the microbiome, and the development of intestinal cancer. Germ-free animal models will be used to examine the role of host-bacterial interactions in intestinal homeostasis, inflammation, and cancer.

  • Carrying out animal experiments in models of colitis, particularly mice.

  • Carrying out primary epithelial and immunocyte cell culture on human and mouse tissues.

  • Performing DNA/RNA extraction and purification, PCR, Primer Designing including degenerate primers, PAGE, Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE), Tube Gel Electrophoresis, Automated Ribosomal lntergenic Spacer

  • Analysis (ARISA), Restriction digestion, DNA Sequencing, Southern Blot, Plasmid preparation, Cloning, Colony PCR, Reverse transcriptase PCR, Real time PCR and flow cytometry.

  • Assisting in the design and planning of experiments in collaboration with other labs and other laboratory members.

  • Being able to assist and direct laboratory assistants.

  • Collecting and analyzing data into written and graphical formats for publication, presentation in meetings, and grant applications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D in Molecular Biology, Immunology or related field.

  • No prior experience required

  • Demonstrated adequate command of English is required (written and verbal).

  • Experience with molecular biology and immunology-based laboratory techniques such as PCR, Southern blots, DNA/RNA extraction and purification, PAGE, flow cytometry, etc.

  • Excellent sterile technique to work with cell and tissue culture is required.

  • Good mouse handling technique and experience in mouse models preferred.

  • Fluency in English is required.  

  • Good oral and written communication skills needed.  

  • Being organized, responsible, tidy, motivated and enthusiastic for basic research.
