Position Type

Job Category
Education

The Oglethorpe University Chemistry Program seeks to hire a full-time Instructor to teach General Chemistry I & II (lecture and/or lab) and/or Organic Chemistry I & II (lecture and/or lab) during the 2023 - 2024 Academic Year. Applicants that can teach Organic Chemistry will be given priority. Teaching assignments may include courses in either the day or evening during each semester; all such assignments carry the responsibility to participate fully in curricular development, implementation, and assessment. An Instructor typically teaches four courses each semester (fall and spring), with two labs being equivalent to one course. This position is for one year with the possibility of no more than one year of renewal. The Instructor is a non-voting member of the faculty.

Lecture sections typically enroll no more than 25 students, and the lab sections enroll no more than 18 students, so the learning environment is ideal for one-on-one faculty-student interactions and for implementing innovative pedagogical strategies. Successful applicants must be interested in progressive, student-centered models of chemistry instruction. Applicants will be expected to foster an inclusive learning environment by engaging in and promoting diverse teaching, learning, and mentoring communities.

Oglethorpe is committed to fostering a campus community and intellectual environment that recruits and maintains diverse faculty and staff, promotes a culture of respect for diverse experiences and perspectives, and understands and addresses the role of inequality in shaping our individual and collective identities. We value faculty mentorship and support faculty teaching and development through the Office of the Provost which works closely with the VP of DEI. The successful candidate will be mentored and supported by Chemistry Program faculty who are committed to excellence in teaching and fostering a collaborative community.

The university currently enrolls a diverse population of nearly 1,500 students who represent more than 30 states and 30 countries. More than half of Oglethorpe’s students identify as persons of color and 40 percent are the first in their families to attend college. Candidates from historically excluded groups, whose work furthers the institution’s diversity, equity, and inclusion goals, and who bring varied life experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply.

Qualifications:

M.S. or Ph.D. in Chemistry or related field. Candidates who are ABD (all but dissertation) will also be considered.

Application Materials:

Candidates should submit a cover letter, current curriculum vitae, and contact information for 2 professional references. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
