About the Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences (TELS)
The Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences (TELS) comprises 40 full-time faculty members preparing more than 500 undergraduate and graduate students and 200 students in alternative teacher licensure programs. A diverse range of programs prepare students to work in Business and Marketing Education, Curriculum and Instructional Coaching, Educational Equity, Educational Psychology, Elementary Education emphasizing STEM, K-12 Reading, Learning Analytics, Learning Design and Technology, middle and secondary English Language Arts and Social Studies, Multilingual Education/English as a Second Language, and Special Education. We advance education through scholarship, leadership, and advocacy. We prepare professionals who are committed to equity and social justice, have deep content knowledge, demonstrate strong working knowledge of effective pedagogies, and realize the potential of digital technologies to enhance learning. Essential Job Duties

The Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences (TELS) in NC State’s College of Education invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor in Elementary Education with an emphasis on preparing/developing elementary teachers of mathematics. The faculty member will work in the elementary education programs, both undergraduate and graduate (MAT and M.Ed.). Potential courses the faculty member will teach include: mathematics methods courses for preservice elementary teachers; mathematics specialization courses for practicing elementary teachers; and general courses in the elementary education programs on topics like instructional design and diversity. Potential opportunities for the faculty member also include: supervising elementary preservice teachers in their field experiences; mentoring doctoral students on teaching elementary mathematics methods and general education courses; and serving as a member on doctoral dissertation committees. The faculty member will establish and maintain partnerships with local school districts by engaging in outreach activities such as facilitating professional development for teachers. The faculty member will engage in scholarship related to teaching and learning and will have opportunities to conduct additional research projects.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Teach in-person and online courses in the elementary teacher preparation programs, both K-6 mathematics methods courses and general courses
  • Teach online graduate courses for K-6 practicing teachers seeking mathematics specialization
  • Advise undergraduate and master’s students
  • Supervise preservice elementary teachers in their field experiences
  • Mentor doctoral students in teaching courses for preservice elementary teachers
  • Provide service and leadership to the program area(s), department, college, and university
  • Contribute to program design, development, and evaluation at the undergraduate and master’s levels
  • Participate in outreach and engagement activities, specifically for elementary schools locally and across North Carolina
  • Recruit practicing teachers for graduate programs
  • Engage in scholarship focused on the teaching and learning of elementary teachers and other small research projects aligned with the aims of the position
  • Collaborate with faculty within the department, college, and across the university

Other Responsibilities

  • Other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Education and Experience

  • PhD or EdD in mathematics education, elementary education, or a closely related field
  • Experiences with K-6 students

Other Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated capacity to teach both online and in-person courses

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least three years of teaching experience in grades K-8
  • Experience teaching preservice and practicing teachers
  • Experience facilitating professional development and building relationships with K-12 schools/districts
  • A record of publication and presentation commensurate with experience, with preference to work related to the scholarship of teaching and learning
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
