This is a 9-month tenure-accruing position with an 80% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station) and 20% extension (Florida Cooperative Extension Service) appointment, available at the University of Florida’s Gulf Coast Research and Education Center (GCREC).  The assignment may change in accordance with the needs of IFAS and the unit. Tenure will accrue in the Horticultural Sciences Department.  The appointee will develop an independent, nationally recognized tomato breeding and genetics program with an emphasis on creating cultivars that have outstanding yield, horticultural characteristics, flavor, and disease and pest resistance.  The appointee will conduct the research program with strong extramural funding, and is expected to publish research in peer-reviewed journals and participate in the graduate education program.  The appointee will partner with the nationally established UF tomato breeding program (which has focused on long term, high risk problems) to efficiently move valuable germplasm into finished cultivars which would include all types of commercially-grown tomatoes.  This position is part of a statewide team of research and extension faculty members whose goal is to maintain and enhance the viability of the Florida tomato industry.  Tomato is the most important vegetable crop in Florida and the Florida industry produces about 50% of all tomatoes harvested in the U.S. for the fresh market.  Extension duties include training of extension agents, commercial growers, and other industry workers through participation in formal extension programs, personal contacts, newsletter articles, fact sheets, and the GCREC website focusing on tomato variety selection and evaluation. The appointed will participate actively in graduate education by chairing graduate committees, serving on graduate committees, supervising thesis and dissertation research, supervising undergraduate research and publishing the results with their graduate students.

The successful candidate will participate actively in undergraduate and graduate education by chairing and serving on graduate committees, supervising thesis, dissertation and undergraduate research, and publishing research results with students. Faculty are encouraged to participate in professional development activities related to teaching and advising and may teach courses and seminars.

Because of the IFAS land-grant mission, all faculty are expected to be supportive of and engaged in all three mission areas—Research, Teaching and Extension—regardless of the assignment split specified in the position description.
