Ecological Scientists – Open Rank (assistant, associate, or senior scientist)

Job Description

Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies seeks to hire multiple creative and collaborative scientists with research programs that explore the frontiers of ecology and ecosystem science in a changing world. We are open to hiring in any areas of expertise, from microbial to global scales and from aquatic to terrestrial. We are particularly interested in candidates with research programs that explore ecosystem change, transformation, and resilience; the relationships of natural or built ecosystems to human well-being; or how changes in biodiversity affect the ways populations, communities, and ecosystems function.

Cary Institute is an independent, non-profit research organization in the Hudson Valley, New York. It is 25-minutes from the city of Poughkeepsie and convenient to train connections to New York City.  Cary Institute scientists have 100% research appointments and receive a 12-month salary. Teaching is not a required part of the job, although Cary scientists often engage in teaching and mentoring at the postdoctoral, graduate, and undergraduate levels. Cary scientists value fundamental science and its application to environmental and societal challenges. Their appointments and the Institute’s culture and strong financial standing give them substantial flexibility to pursue important and innovative initiatives in application, education, and engagement in addition to their research.

Successful candidates should have a PhD and a strong record of scholarship and service and may be hired at the assistant, associate or senior scientist rank.  Cary scientists are expected to generate external funding in support of their research with help from an experienced administrative team. Candidates from historically underrepresented groups in science are particularly encouraged to apply. Questions about the position may be directed to members of the search committee: Kathleen Weathers (Chair), Winslow Hansen, Shannon LaDeau and Chris Solomon. The anticipated start date is Summer 2024. Review of applications will begin on 30 September 2023.

This is a salaried, exempt, full-time, benefited position. Salary is determined according to appointment rank with the assistant at $115,000–$130,000 on an annualized basis.

To apply, please complete our online application at https://www.caryinstitute.org/about/careers-cary. Please attach a single pdf document consisting of a cover letter, including discussion of your philosophy of diversity and inclusion in scholarship, collaboration, and mentoring; curriculum vitae; research statement; and the names and full contact information for three references.
