The Associate Scientist performs experiments based on predetermined research protocols and objectives. Autonomously manages day-to-day research activities requiring in-depth technical knowledge and experience in a specific area or discipline. Designs and executes experimental protocols for assigned projects. Serves as an authoritative source on research practices, precedents, theory, and principles. Supervises division/sub-unit staff and ensures all projects are completed in a timely fashion. Essential Functions: Establishes policies and procedures for a division/sub-unit. Ensures staff adheres to all policies, procedures, and professional standards within the division/sub-unit.

Responsibilities include: The Associate Scientist will have in depth knowledge and expertise in the fields of neurodegeneration, in the context of HIV infection, substance use and glioma. The application of the Associate Scientist’s scientific expertise will advance the knowledge regarding biomedical pathways and treatments for neurodegeneration. Skills and abilities will include hypothesis driven experimental design, quantitative data assessment and interpretation, communication of data and impact of the findings to human disease. The Associate Scientist will be able to prepare presentations, manuscripts, and grant applications to describe and secure funding for the science. The Associate Scientist will broker relationships with outside/external scientists and biotechnology representatives and develop collaborations on behalf of the lab. The Associate Scientist will manage secured grant funding and direct projects within the lab under the guidance of the PI.  The Associate Scientist will train personnel and students in protocols, standards, policies, and procedures.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:
Ph.D. or M.D. and at least four years of Postdoctoral experience.

Required Skills & Abilities:
*Ability to manage projects
*Working knowledge of all applicable computer software programs*
*Management skills (including planning and communication skills).
*Knowledge of applicable professional principles, extensive knowledge of University policies and procedures, and financial and budgeting principles
*Demonstrated proficiency in research field
