Job Summary:
This position will focus on on developing small molecule-based or genetic approaches to reduce the formation of sub-RPE deposits in vivo and in vitro. The candidate who fills this position will be fiercely independent, self-motivated, and willing to work with porcine primary cultures, mice, and human donor tissue. The incumbent is expected to design, plan, execute, and evaluate experiments and projects independently, as well as procure their own funding and manage those projects.
Job Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising independent and complex research projects spanning multiple years. Formulates and defines systems scope based on in-depth subject matter knowledge obtained through experience, literature review, finance experience, and research expertise. Responsible for establishing new culture systems in the lab, including induced pluripotent stem cells, primary porcine retinal pigmented epithelial cells, and new live-cell imaging techniques. Serve as an expert resource to lab members, collaborators, and our scientific community more broadly at the University of Minnesota.
  • Responsible for acquiring data and assembling it into manuscripts, posters, and oral presentations. The incumbant will use this data to inform next set of experiments, including performing power calculations, statistical analysis, and new analytical methods. Present at regional and international meetings in order to disseminate research.
  • Manage financial and budgetary aspects of existing projects; and secure additional grants and be responsible to managing their monetary balances. Responsible for generating the interim progress and financial reports for individual grants.
  • Coordinates with lab personnel on their projects, assists them with troubleshooting and finds new approaches when resolving issues.
  • Constructs, assembles, and operates complex experimental or other special designed laboratory apparatus and equipment. Teach other lab personnel how to perform these same cultures.
  • Supervises high school, undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students. Provides advice to fellow instructors and PIs. Evaluate and provide feedback lab personnel.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in biomedical sciences or related field
  • Substantial independent research experience and publication record
  • Knowledge of relevant biological systems related to retinal research including advantages and limitations of in vitro (immortalized, primary, and iPSC-RPE) and in vivo systems (primarily mice).
  • Experience processing mouse ocular tissue for qPCR, western blotting, ELISA, immunofluorescence, and especially electron microscopy (SEM, TEM).
  • Willing to work with and process human donor eyes.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to secure independent funding to support own research.
