Position Summary:
The research assistant in the Villanova School of Business Department of Economics will gather and verify data related to decision making in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The primary data source is United Nations (UN) meeting records, available from the UN Official Document System and the UN Digital Library. This will contribute to an ongoing research collaboration between Christopher Kilby (Villanova faculty member), Simon Hug (University of Geneva faculty member), and Joshua Fjelstul (University of Geneva post-doctoral fellow). Candidates must be able to complete tasks on a pre-defined schedule while working remotely. In the case of errors in the English language version of meeting records, the research assistant should be able to read one other language used in these UN documents.
This is a temporary position for Summer 2023 with 5-10 hours of work anticipated each week
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Gather documents from UN website & other online locations.
- Skim through documents to locate votes and other decisions.
- Record information from votes and other decisions (including description and summary, country-level votes for roll call votes, document #, page #, date). Data entry using Excel.
- Clean data using functions in Excel and Stata software packages.
- Meet regularly with supervisor to review data & methodology. Meetings can be via Zoom.
- Perform other duties and assist with projects as assigned.
- Search academic & popular literature for relevant prior work and case studies.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Research in Economics, Finance, or Political Science.
- Familiarity with Excel.
- Fluency in English (reading and speaking).
- Basic understanding of world geography and the functions of the United Nations.
- General computer skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- MA in Economics, Finance, or Political Science
- Manual data collection.
- Proficiency with MS Word & Dropbox.
- Good communication skills; ability to summarize.
- Proficiency in Russian, Spanish, Chinese, or Arabic (reading only).
- Familiarity with United Nations meeting records structure and the categories of UNGA decisions.
- Knowledge of advanced search functions in Adobe and Excel
