The Opportunity

The Azarian Lab in the Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Central Florida (UCF) invites applications for a non-tenure earning 12-month, assistant scholar/scientist of medicine position.

The selected candidate will contribute to the Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences mission by developing and applying innovative analytical approaches for studying the genomics of microbial populations. Efforts will include application of next generation sequencing technologies and advanced comparative genomic tools for the analysis of bacterial and viral pathogens.

The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and proficient with a track record of excellent research in genomics, evolutionary biology, theoretical ecology, disease dynamics or a related field. The assistant scholar/scientist of medicine will work closely with Dr. Azarian and staff in the multidisciplinary research team where they will have the opportunity for professional development through interaction with other scientists applying bioinformatic, epidemiological and epidemic modeling approaches to viral and bacterial pathogens.

The assistant scholar/scientist of medicine will have access to a wealth of resources including high-quality genomic and epidemiological data, a cutting-edge computing facility, robust analytical pipelines, the most recent sequencing and laboratory technology, and research expertise in genomics, mathematics, and computer science. The position is available immediately.

Minimum Qualifications:

A Ph.D. from an accredited institution in biomedical sciences, ecology/biology, bioinformatics or a closely related field. The selected candidate must also have a record of a completed postdoctoral fellowship.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates that have a strong track record of publications in the field (5 or more publications in relevant journals), general knowledge of infectious disease epidemiology, experience in programming using a common language such as Perl or Python, bioinformatics, the ability to work independently and with collaborators, and experience with mentorship of junior scientists.
