Research Associate - Remote US

Job Description


The School of Education and Human Development at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks applicants for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to collaborate on projects related to the history of African American education. Postdoctoral employment is typically limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years, and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University. Employment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate is viewed as preparatory for a full-time academic or research career, is supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship during the period.

The salary will be $45,000 per year for a 30-35 hour week.
The incumbent will primarily work on a historical project about school segregation and an oral history project about teachers. We seek a self-driven researcher with strong archival and oral history methods skills to organize, research, and write up reports.  This is a remote

Minimum Requirements

  • A Ph.D. degree is required by the start date of this position.

Preferred Requirements

  • A Ph.D. degree in education history or history.

  • The successful candidate(s) will have a substantial background in historical research and oral history methods, be able to work independently, and multi-task. Strong writing skills are highly valued.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills are required.

  • A record of publications in peer-reviewed education journals is desired.

This position will remain open until filled. This is a one-year appointment to begin in the summer 2023; however, the appointment may be renewed for an additional one-year increment, contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance.

Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
