Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit | The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Department of Biology teaches biological concepts and research methods to biology and medical technology majors and prepares them for professional careers and/or advanced study. We also introduce non-biology majors to basic biological knowledge and its applications to our society. We prepare graduate students for professional careers and/or further graduate study. By involving undergraduate and graduate students in research, we increase society’s knowledge of living organisms and their environments and we enhance our students’ technical and analytical skills so that they can contribute meaningfully to an increasingly technological society. We apply our skills by serving the University, our profession, and the larger community. |
Position Summary | The Post-Doctoral Fellow will work on a project aiming to understand the divers of food chain length in rivers. The project employs theoretical and data-synthesis approaches to advance the conceptual understanding of how food chain length is determined in natural rivers. In this project, we are particularly interested in the role of geometric features of river ecosystems as well as other potential environmental factors in driving food web attributes at large spatial scales. The successful candidate will (1) develop a theoretical framework to predict food web structure in rivers, (2) develop a global database of stable isotope data and environmental variables to perform a meta-analysis of food chain length, (3) quantify the effects of river network complexity, ecosystem size, disturbance, and resource availability on food chain length through statistical modeling, and (4) distribute analytical tools developed in this project. Candidates with strong backgrounds in theoretical food web ecology are particularly encouraged to apply. The successful applicant will work closely with a team of collaborators from multiple institutions and will have opportunities to develop independent lines of research using the developed analytical tools. The candidate is expected to communicate the results through publications in scientific journals, presentations at professional meetings, and/or outreach events. |
