If so, we are looking for someone like you to join the Flight Navigation, Guidance, and Control Evaluation and Development Group in the Flight Systems Branch at APL.
We are seeking a GN&C research engineer with a strong background in Guidance and Optimal Control to help us develop state of the art guidance algorithms for hypersonic missile systems. These weapon systems come with significant GN&C challenges, offer plenty of opportunities for innovation, and are the research priority of the nation. We as a nation need to rise to this challenge and develop these systems, and we need your help to do this.
Your primary responsibilities will be to:
• Conduct trade studies of different guidance schemes, affiliated computational tools, and algorithms for the design and analysis of next generation Hypersonic weapon systems. Develop state of the art guidance methodologies by leveraging side information from sensors under hard system constraints. Generate optimal trajectories utilizing the developed Guidance algorithms.
• Document and present research results to peers, technical leadership, and program management.
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
• Hold a Master’s degree or above in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering (or closely related technical discipline) with a focus on Guidance, Navigation, and Control.
• Have a strong background in Guidance & Optimal Control, Sensor Fusion, and Optimization.
• Have experience in formulating mathematical optimization problems and utilizing numerical solvers to obtain solutions.
• Have experience in the fundamentals of guidance and optimal control and the ability to formulate hard constraints in a classical optimal control framework.
• Are Interested in optimal trajectory design using state of the art Guidance & Control algorithms.
• Have professional experience or coursework in one or more of the following: Optimal State Estimation, Optimal Control, Trajectory Design, Constrained Optimization, Guidance Algorithms, Flight Dynamics, Numerical Methods, Sensor fusion, and Error Covariance Analysis.
• Have a passion to work on GN&C Flight systems with a solid technical mathematical background.
• Have a demonstrated proficiency in Matlab, with an exposure to Simulink.
• Have a strong interest in applied research and innovation.
• Have excellent technical writing and technical communication skills and are able to function as part of a team with diverse skill sets.
• Are able to take ownership of technical tasks and provide deliverables in a timely manner. Are able to support multiple technical projects simultaneously.
• Are able to obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

• Hold a PhD in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering (or closely related technical discipline) with dissertation work in Guidance, Navigation, and Control or 5+ years of relevant GN&C professional experience.
• Have experience in Optimal Trajectory Design using state of the art Guidance & Control algorithms.
• Have experience in working with state of the art Optimal Control Solvers.
• Have professional experience or coursework in one or more of the following: Nonlinear Programming, System Theory, Robust & Adaptive Control, Non-Linear Systems and ISR Systems.
• Have experience with real time flight systems.
• Have proficiency in Simulink and Object-Oriented Programming.
• Currently hold an active Secret (or above) clearance.
