Behavioral Health Coordinator

 

The Behavioral Health Coordinator (BHC) is responsible for coordinating support to the staff of each camp in the response and management of behavioral, social, and emotional concerns and issues that may occur with campers. Support may involve direct support to campers; however, the primary role of the BHC is to offer solutions, techniques and expert advice and feedback to the staff and management who will work directly with campers. Direct behavioral health support for staff is directed through the organizations Employee Assistance Program. (EAP), though the BHC may be called upon to assist with staff behavioral health crises. The BHC reports to the Operations Director and may take direction from the Summer Health & Wellness Coordinator. This position requires residing on or near campus during camp session and carrying a pager and being available to respond to issues when called upon.

  • Providing Pre-camp staff trainings that 1) provide concrete tools to help work with camper behaviors and de-escalation techniques, and 2) help leadership staff within camps to learn techniques they can share with staff to help manage situations as they arise.
  • Providing on-site support during the summer:
  • Campers at all Farm & Wilderness camps
  • Individual camp Lodge Heads, Camper advocates and Medical Staff to help direct their support of campers
  • Staff at Farm & Wilderness to help support their work with campers.
  • Camp Directors and YR Program Director to help support their work with campers.
  • Follow up with Camp Directors as appropriate.
  • Debrief with parents/staff/therapists as necessary.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Set up a regular visit schedule to ensure coverage at all Woodard and Ninevah camps
  • Be on-call for crisis and emergency response as related to campers who have social, behavioral, or emotional health issues.
  • Assist with follow up for completion of incident reports as it relates to behavioral health, social or emotional incidents
  • Train, support, and supervise staff in enforcing safety, following emergency protocols, and applying appropriate behavior management techniques;
  • Attend and help facilitate crisis response
  • Be present and record notes for calls to Department of Child Services (DCS) for mandated reporting.
  • Attend weekly Risk Team meeting to review incident reports and behavioral health at F&W.
  • Write an end-of-summer report that reviews and critiques all aspects of the Behavioral Health Coordinator position.
  • Take on related responsibilities as necessary or assigned

Note: This position is not intended to provide scheduled therapy sessions or diagnostic mental health clinical evaluations. This position is intended to primarily offer support and guidance in providing solutions and techniques to manage social, emotional, behavioral and mental health related issues.

 

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Minimum education requirements are a bachelor’s degree in related field with post graduate certificate or license in Social Work, Counseling, or related field of study.
  • Minimum of 5 years professional experience in counseling, social work, or related field
  • Experience working with/counseling children ages 4-17-years.
  • Experience successfully using and teaching, techniques to manage social/emotional challenges with teenagers.
  • Experience with and commitment to youth development and progressive social change
  • Ability to lead crisis intervention including strong counseling skills
  • Ability to observe staff and camper behavior, enforce safety, follow emergency protocols, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of campers served and interact appropriately with campers in a variety of situations
  • Cognitive and communicative ability to run activities, supervise staff, and support and facilitate adolescent groups
  • Possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers
  • Professional character that is consistent, capable, self-directed, well organized, flexible, personable, and is able to maintain composure in a changing environment
  • Openness to work with people (both staff and campers) from diverse backgrounds (e.g. economic, racial, religious, political, geographical, sexual orientation, cultural)
  • Respectful, clear, and patient interpersonal communication skill set that allows for collaborative work as part of a community or team
