Research Associate, Beirne B. Carter Immunology Center UVA

Job Description


The Beirne B. Carter Immunology Center (CIC) at the University of Virginia’s School of Medicine seeks a Research Scientist to join the CIC. The successful applicant must have demonstrated experience in immunology and/or microbiology. The work will require that the incumbent display significant knowledge concerning mechanisms that take place during host-microbe interactions and/or autoimmunity. Additionally, the position requires experience in molecular and cellular biology, transgenic mouse models, and mice models of autoimmunity.  For more information, please visit: https://www.immunology.virginia.edu/

•    Full-time research or scholarship at the University
•    Preparatory for a full-time academic or research career
•    Supervised by a senior scholar; and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship
•    In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned
 

Eligibility for National Institutes of Health (NIH) post-doctoral fellowship funding is helpful, but not mandatory. The incumbent will participate in a multiplicity of relevant lab projects and in writing study reports for the study sponsors, papers, and grant applications and will be expected to develop research programs, as time permits. The incumbent will also be expected to attend and participate in laboratory meetings and CIC-related seminars, as well as work with graduate students, technicians, fellows, and collaborators in the laboratories involved in the project. 

Qualified candidates must have:

Education: Doctoral or terminal degree at the time of hire in Immunology, Molecular or Cellular Biology or a related field.
Experience:
Candidate must demonstrate a high competency in a wide range of murine procedures and molecular biology techniques including bacterial cultures, microbiome analysis, metabolomics, single cell and bulk sequencing, cell culture, flow cytometry, protein analysis (western blot and ELISA), and histology.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:
•    Strong time management skills
•    Strong communication skills
•    Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA. This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance.  Review of candidates will begin July 14, 2023, but this position will remain open until filled.  This position will sponsor applicants for work visas.

Physical demands: This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

Postdoctoral employment is temporary and is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University. Employment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate is viewed as training and is preparatory for a full-time academic or research career, is supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship during the training period.
