The Opportunity

The Nicholson School of Communication and Media (NSCM) in the College of Sciences (COS) at the University of Central Florida (UCF) invites applications for a nine-month, non-tenure-earning instructor or lecturer anticipated to begin January 2024.

The successful candidate will contribute to the Film and Mass Media program’s mission through teaching undergraduate and/or graduate-level courses.  Graduate-level activities may include supporting the M.F.A. degree by providing critiques, mentoring, and serving on graduate thesis committees. 

We seek scholars or practitioners of film production, television, or related disciplines whose work engages social, creative, or discipline relevant issues and encourages and challenges students to increase critical fluency in various film forms.  We are especially interested in individuals who can contribute through their creative research, teaching and/or service to the diversity and excellence of our academic community and foster an environment in which faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds, cultures and personal experiences are welcomed and can thrive.

NSCM is a large, student-centered school with a collegial and friendly faculty and staff.  NSCM strives to be a premier academic program known for excellence in research, teaching and service to students and the community.  The NSCM Film and Mass Media program offers a B.A. in film production that emphasizes collaborative skills in filmmaking, a B.F.A. in film production that emphasizes creative directorial skills (limited access), and an M.F.A. in feature film production that offers students creative opportunities in fiction, nonfiction, or experimental cinematic modes.  In addition to the Film degrees, the Film and Mass Media program includes journalism and media production management (formerly radio-television) degrees.  For more information, visit https://communication.ucf.edu .

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a master's degree or BA/BFA (for an instructor) or a terminal degree (for a lecturer) in a related field (e.g., Media Production, Film and Television Production, Screenwriting, Cinema Studies, Visual Effects Production, Mass Communication, etc.) from an accredited institution by the time of hire.  In addition, all applicants must possess two years of experience as an instructor of record in teaching undergraduate courses at an accredited institution of higher learning, with a demonstrated ability to teach a wide array of classes in foundational production skills such as cinematography, editing, or sound design; foundational writing skills such as script analysis, writing for film and television, and short script; foundational cinema studies such as film theory and history; a grasp of academic responsibilities; and demonstrated potential for active university service.

In the case of having a BA or BFA degree (for instructor only), this must be accompanied by at least 10 years of proven narrative fiction film professional experience. 

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates with the following attributes:

  • An established record of creative practice and/or training with an effective competency in fictional narrative film production;

  • Strong connections within the contemporary narrative fiction film production industry with two or more years of industry experience outside of graduate school;

  • Effective communication skills;

  • Experience in collaborating on academic initiatives with colleagues or peers; and

  •  Professional experience required to mentor graduate students to produce independent microbudget feature-length films, from funding to production to distribution.

  • A sample syllabus.

  • A copy of transcripts from the highest degree-granting institution.

  • Three academic or professional references (including address, phone number and email address).

The selected candidate will be required to submit official transcripts (and, as applicable, U.S. degree equivalency evaluations) documenting the conferral of their qualifying academic credentials.
