Senior Scientist/Oncology Bioscience – Cell Death

Waltham, MA

At AstraZeneca, we work together across global boundaries to discover, develop, and deliver innovative and meaningful medicines and other healthcare solutions that enrich the lives of patients as well as their families and communities. In AstraZeneca Oncology, our vision is redefining our solutions to cancer and restoring patients' lives.

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced scientist with a strong background in molecular and cellular biology to join the Oncology Bioscience group in Boston as a lab-based Senior Scientist. You will be a key member of a dynamic and collaborative cross-functional Cell Death Team. Your primary responsibility will be to develop and run cell-based assays to support preclinical drug development of projects from target validation up through phase 2 clinical trials. These efforts will ultimately lead to the identification of drug candidates and the generation of compelling preclinical data packages to progress promising drug discovery projects towards clinical development.

Key responsibilities

  • Routine delivery of medium- to high-throughput in vitro compound screening assays to support medicinal chemistry within projects

  • Independent development and implementation of various cell-based assays to evaluate mechanism of action, biological effect, anti-tumor activity, target engagement requirements, patient selection, and combination/resistance mechanisms for projects within the oncology portfolio

  • Analysis, interpretation and presentation of data and its implications for the project(s)

  • Maintenance of laboratory records, protocols, summaries, and reports

  • Awareness and reporting of current developments in the literature related to the project

Essential Requirements

  • BS/MS with 5+ years of industry experience in biochemistry, molecular/cellular biology or equivalent fields. A PhD is not required.

  • Experience in drug discovery, especially within oncology

  • Strong expertise in mammalian cell culture, including transfections and stable clone generation

  • Prior laboratory experience with molecular and cell-based assays, including but not limited to apoptosis assays, proliferation assays, flow cytometry, ELISA, western blotting, RT-qPCR, and reporter assays

  • Familiarity with independently designing, executing, and analyzing in vitro combination experiments

  • Mouse handling and dosing experience is a plus but not required

  • Demonstrated proficiency in data processing, preferably with GraphPad Prism or Spotfire, and data management

  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a delivery focus

  • Ability to work in a matrixed, team-oriented environment

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
