Lab Specialist, Department of Neuroscience

Job Description


Dr. Ukpong Eyo in the Center for Brain Immunology and Glia and Department of Neuroscience at the University of Virginia seeks a motivated and detail-oriented Laboratory Specialist to perform and assist with laboratory management and experimental procedures especially with cell culture. The incumbent will be responsible for conducting various experiments around the primary isolation of glia and culturing / co-culturing them, helping grad students and postdoctoral researchers on their projects, and training undergraduate students. The Eyo laboratory is a diverse group of passionate researchers aiming to elucidate the mechanisms by which microglia are involved in the developing, mature and diseased brain and how they interact with the vasculature. Techniques that will be employed include flow cytometry, confocal and electron microscopy, in vivo two photon imaging, behavioral studies, and transcriptomic techniques.
A Bachelor's degree in Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, Neuroscience or a related field and a minimum of three years of experience working in a laboratory setting is required. Experience working with either or both primary or iPSC cells in culture is strongly desired especially if the candidate has had expertise with microglia and/or astrocytes. Applicants should also possess strong problem-solving skills and be able to work independently and as part of a team.

Qualified candidates must have:

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience: 3 years of experience. 6 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.
