About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

SMU Libraries seeks a full-time Undergraduate Success Librarian as part of an instructional team that supports the academic experience and retention of students. The successful candidate will collaborate with librarians, departmental faculty, and campus program coordinators on the design and implementation of SMU Libraries’ support for academic success, community-building, and wellness of various undergraduate student populations. The ideal candidate is student-focused, growth-oriented, and open to exploring and implementing new ideas in a highly collaborative, team-based environment. Additionally, the candidate should demonstrate the ability to represent diverse student perspectives through their work and to successfully plan projects. This position reports to the Director of Educational Initiatives.

SMU is a nationally ranked private research university in Dallas, TX, with eight degree-granting schools. SMU Libraries includes six libraries on the main campus and one library at our satellite location in Taos, NM.

Essential Functions:

  • Lead the SMU Libraries’ Student Success Team in developing student support services and events in library spaces.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with campus partners and coordinate SMU Libraries’ involvement with them in support of student success.

  • Lead SMU Libraries’ instructional and academic support for first year writing courses in collaboration with librarians and departmental faculty. Provide instruction and consultation to first year courses and visiting high school groups.

  • Collect relevant data from campus partners and build relationships with student groups in order to understand needs for various populations (first year students, diverse students, student athletes, international and ESL students, transfer students, etc.).

  • Represent undergraduate student needs within SMU Libraries on various committees. Work on one or more project teams.

  • Provide general reference service.

  • Maintain currency in pedagogy, information literacy, student success, and topics related to equity, diversity, accessibility, and inclusion. Serve on professional committees and/or contribute to the profession through scholarly publications.

 
Qualifications
 


Education and Experience:

Required Qualifications:
  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in library science
  • Experience in inclusive instruction of research techniques and information literacy.
  • A minimum of two years' experience post MLS working in a library or university setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience working collaboratively and conducting outreach across organizational units.
  • A record of professional service and scholarship contributed to a previous institution, community and/or the Library and Information Science Field.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in reference and information literacy instruction in an academic library.
  • Knowledge of instructional design, universal design for learning, or critical information literacy.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with people of diverse identities and backgrounds, as gained through cross-cultural study, training, teaching or other comparable experiences.
  • Experience in developing undergraduate student success programming.
  • Experience in assessing student needs through focus groups or other methods.
  • Experience in leading a team to accomplish a project or to support student success.
