Position Summary

Jackson State University invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Science Engineering and Technology.

Jackson State University (JSU), a state-supported urban research institution located in metropolitan Jackson, Mississippi. It is a diverse, technologically-advanced four-year university steeped in history and committed to preparing its students to become global leaders of the future. The University is therefore seeking an innovative, dynamic, and visionary leader to be the next Dean for the College of Science Engineering & Technology. The candidate must have strong academic leadership experience, a commitment to excellence, and the ability to appropriately respond to challenges and opportunities in a manner that propels the College as a premier source for global science, engineering and research excellence.

The College of Science, Engineering and Technology (CSET) at Jackson State University is ABET accredited, and houses several innovative programs of excellence in education, research, and professional service at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. CSET promotes the production of highly competitive graduates as Judged by the highest academic standards in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The College also endeavors to be recognized both nationally and internationally as preparers of outstanding men and women scientists.

Job Description Summary:
Reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean serves on the Deans’ Council and functions as the chief administrative, fiscal, and academic officer of the College. The Dean is responsible for the effectiveness and prominence of the School’s educational programs, research activities, outreach programs, globalization and international education initiatives. The Dean ensures that the policies, guidelines and regulations established by the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning, the Office of the President, and the Division of Academic Affairs are followed. Specifically, he/she is responsible for implementing the College’s policies and procedures in concert with the University’s policies. The Dean will have responsibility for communicating the vision and goals of the college to all stakeholders, while leading the strategic, programmatic, financial, fundraising, and management operations that support the mission of CSET, and its role within the University.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Required Education

The ideal candidate will possess a terminal degree in one of the disciplines housed in the college, and a record sufficient to merit appointment as a tenured professor, or possess a related degree with experience in leading a College of Science, Engineering and Technology.

Minimum Required Experience

  • The Dean of the College of Science, Engineering and Technology must be an individual from the academic, business and/or nonprofit communities.

  • Successful administrative experience at an ABET-accredited college at the level of academic department head, assistant dean, or dean or other comparable administrative experience appropriate for the college is desired.

  • Also strongly desired are a record of current and past scholarly/creative and professional activities, and demonstrated evidence of strong and consistent teamwork and collaboration across diverse constituencies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • The Dean of the College of Science, Engineering and Technology must be a visionary leader with a proven record in building positive relationships, securing funding, and managing finances.

  • A clearly demonstrated entrepreneurial attitude and commitment to diversity and excellence are essential.

  • In addition, we seek a leader who demonstrates: evidence of leadership in organizational and change management; experience designing and implementing new programs and initiatives; proven ability to lead a complex organization while articulating a clear vision and goals for the future; and, thoughtful organizational skills and deployment of resources in order to achieve strategic ends.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Strongly desired are excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Provides collegial and dynamic leadership for the College’s faculty, staff, students, and programs.

  • Essential Duties Summary:

  • Actively engages in fundraising and development activities to support the vision and mission of the College.

  • Oversees relevant assessment as well as ABET and other relevant accreditation processes.

  • Responsible for overseeing global engagement, research, and student success at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

  • Drives initiatives for the development of faculty, staff and students.

  • Facilitate increases in resource acquisition via grants, contracts, and other external fundraising.

  • Responsible for academic and strategic planning for the College to enhance its image and brand.

  • Establishes and maintains effective professional relationships with diverse groups of faculty, staff, students, and alumni.

  • Provides efficient fiscal and budget management for the College.

  • Recruits and hires effective chairs, faculty, program directors, staff and others who are direct reports to ensure accountability for high-level performance within the college.

  • Supports college programs with academic quality and learning assessment measures to ensure compliance with University, and SACSCOC requirements.

  • Establishes and maintains effective professional relationships within business and professional bodies; government agencies; non-profit organizations; and alumni, resulting in employment opportunities for students.

  • Develops and manages effectively and efficiently the human, physical, and financial resources of the College.

  • Fosters and contributes to institutional leadership and collaboration by serving on the University Dean’s Council.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Provost and President.
