Position Summary

The Field Practicum Director for the Center for Agrarian Learning will oversee the experiential learning component of students in MCC’s Entrepreneurial Agriculture Degree. This position will coordinate the production of fruits and vegetables on the MCC campus in order to best facilitate hands-on learning for students and, as seasonally appropriate and available, to meet the need of the Culinary Department and Campus Food Service. This position will require knowledge and experience in production farming, and some physical labor.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Establish practicum/internship site on MCC campus for agriculture students
• Establish coordination between the Culinary Department and Food Service to determine appropriate crops to grow
• Oversee student practicum on campus including coordination of farm site and student employment/internships
• Supervise student farm workers
• Oversee campus farm
• Coordinate use of produce on campus with Culinary Department and Food Service
• Serve as liaison between industry, faculty and MCC to coordinate on-farm internships
• Develop and revise database with current roster of placement and internship locations used for practicum/internship placement queries
• Assist the Director in cultivating and maintaining current and future industry relations
• Assist the Director in furthering initiatives housed in the Center for Agrarian Learning
• Assists in the development of departmental goals and objectives; makes recommendations for improvement of services to students as needed
• Assists in the development and implementation of policies and procedures
• Assists the Director in managing operational issues
• Represents the department in the absence of the Director; serves on college committees as requested
• Work collaboratively with others (e.g. colleagues, stakeholders, vendors) to accomplish functions and responsibilities
• Support and participate in the College’s commitment to continuous improvement
• Assume additional duties as assigned by immediate supervisor

Additional Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
• 3-5 years of management experience in agriculture, specifically vegetable and/or fruit production – overseeing all aspects from seed through sales
• 2+ years of experience managing people new to agriculture (students, interns, employees)
• Experience managing a farm budget
• Experience managing farm customer/sales accounts
• Commitment to serving learners of diverse backgrounds
• Experience overseeing and implementing budgets and project management

Desired Qualifications

• Experience with and understanding of local and regional food systems
• Business ownership or management experience in agriculture
• Familiarity with farming in the upper-Midwest
• Aptitude for mechanics and building

Skills and Specifications

• Ability to grow, from seed, a diverse number of vegetable crops and manage them successfully through harvest
• Experience with post-harvest handling, including best practices for cooling and set-up for wash and pack facilities; some basic refrigeration knowledge helpful
• Knowledge of food safety protocols, or willingness to learn and put into practice
• Demonstrated experience with both mechanized and hand-scale production systems
• Comfortable handling machinery including tractors, walk-behind tractors, cultivating implements, waterwheel transplanter, front end loaders and other such equipment.
• Experiential knowledge of, and passion for, local and regional food systems and their challenges and benefits.
• Demonstrated ability to connect with and communicate with a diverse group of stakeholders including farmers and food system professionals.
• Demonstrated ability to listen and ask questions in order to discover the unmet needs of the farming community, particularly those engaged in local and regional food systems, or those who desire to be engaged.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
• Ability to lead and work effectively with community members, faculty, staff, and students
• Strategic planning ability
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to problem solve
• Ability to work independently yet have a strong team orientation and to develop productive working relationships at all levels of the organization
