Job Summary

We are looking for a qualified candidate to support on-base research efforts in support of the Air Force Research Laboratory, Materials and Manufacturing Directorate. At the broadest level our research group plans, directs and conducts in house and extramural research and development of materials technologies with an emphasis of functional applications with sufficient maturity to transition to the warfighter.

We are looking for a motivated, creative mind with hands-on capability and experience to support customers in the Photonic materials branch at the Air Force Research Laboratories (AFRL) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB) in Dayton, OH. We are looking for a research grade candidate versed in areas of physics, materials, chemistry, optics, and/or engineering.

This opportunity involves design and production of long crystalline fibers, including machine/process development for same. The optimization of optical characteristics through the understanding of constituent material properties and design of nano-to-micro scale structures will be involved. In particular, we seek to create new materials with novel optical responses to move beyond basic fiber structure to cladding/core structures.

Roles and Responsibilities

Education, Experience, and Skills

  • Work might include the following areas: nonlinear optics, simulation, computational, computation, electromagnetics, numerical calculation, optics, physics, waveguides, photonic crystals, raman scattering, wave propagation, lasers; solid-state materials; solid-state physics; materials science; solid-state materials; solid-state physics; structured materials; stratified media; optics; optical theory; optical design; computational science, programming, coding, computing, parallel computing.

  • High quality (single) crystal fiber growth, including methods such as Pedestal Growth.

  • Growth system modification, re-design, and re-development to produce longer fibers.

  • Growth system modification, re-design, and re-development to produce coated fibers.

  • Precursor material/characteristics re-design and process redesign/re-development enable both of the prior goals.

  • Electro-optic measurement and analysis: optical material characterization, laser performance measurements, non-linear characterization, and super-continuum measurement.

  • Data analysis and assessment; scientific report writing (journal articles).

Physical Requirements / Travel

  • PhD in Physics, Materials, Engineering, or similar.

  • 0+ years with PhD, or 5+ years with Master's degree.

 

  • May require lifting up to 25 pounds.

  • Requires visual and dextrous acuity to perform small scale scientific experiments, operate lab tools and equipment, and use a keyboard and monitor.

  • Must be able to work in a lab environment that includes high power lasers, vacuum systems, clean rooms.

  • 0-10% travel within the Continental United States (CONUS).
