Position Summary

 

The Coordinator of Services, Student Support Services is responsible for implementing an advising and mentoring program that addresses the personal, academic, career, and financial aid advising needs of the First-Year College Experience (Bridge) participants. Develops and facilitates student success workshops and cultural enrichment activities for project participants and to ensure participants’ completion of postsecondary education and transfer to four-year institutions.

POSTING DATE: JUNE 1, 2023

SALARY: Appropriate placement on Salary Schedule C3 (range: $44,895 - $91,214). This is a grant-funded position. In the event that funds for this position are discontinued, the College shall have the right to discontinue the position. Neither tenure or non-probationary status may be attained in this position.

ANTICIPATED START DATE: AUGUST 1, 2023

The position will be based initially at the Sparks Campus in Eufaula.

More than one position in the same job classification may be filled from the applicants for this position should another vacancy occur during the search process.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Recruitment and Retention of participants. Supports the TRIO Program by assisting in the recruitment of program participants for the Bridge program.


  • Assist in identifying and selecting Bridge participants.
  • Visits target high schools and consults with school representatives about potential bridge participants as well as Talent Search and Upward Bound programs.
  • Facilitates awareness of the TRIO programs by marketing the program and promoting program services through informational presentations to faculty, staff, prospective students, and/or by distributing program literature at student festivals, strategic locations across campus, and elsewhere as appropriate.
  • Helps to assure that TRIO students and potential TRIO students have full information on opportunities and responsibilities.
  • Advocates on the behalf of participants with faculty, staff, and colleagues, if necessary, ensuring participants meet guidelines for maintaining active involvement in the program.
  • Maintains regular personal contact with participants enrolled.
  • Encourages retention by providing personal and academic support and guidance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Program Administration. Develops and implements a comprehensive program that addresses the personal, academic, financial aid, and career needs of project participants.
  • Assists the Director in developing and conducting project activities.
  • Assists Director in providing academic advisement to program participants and monitoring their academic progress.
  • Assists the Director in planning and supervising cultural enrichment activities. Provides cultural diversity workshops for students to encourage cultural growth and expansion of students’ worldview.
  • Participates in in-service training and attends professional meetings and conferences related to objectives of the SSS project. Stays abreast of current trends and developments in the field of education and attends workshops to enhance and improve advising skills.
  • Provides personal, academic, and career advising to program participants and documents such sessions.
  • Maintains comprehensive participant records to document personal growth and academic progress.
  • Selects and administers academic, aptitude, and interest inventories to program participants as indicated by needs assessment.
  • Provides assistance with any personal, academic, financial aid, career exploration, and other problems they are experiencing.
  • Assures the accuracy, completeness, and confidentiality of participants’ files by working with the Director to assemble and maintain the components of the student file.
  • Assists all students seeking academic information, such as selection of academic majors, and directing students to resources within the College that provide assistance in making career and academic major choices.
  • Assists participants in completing applications for college admissions and financial aid.
  • Refers program participants to appropriate community, counseling, or support agencies as necessary.
  • Becomes familiar with higher education institutions that formal bridge students attended.
  • Produces newsletter to promote and inform readers of Bridge activities and upcoming deadlines.
  • Distributes a monthly publication about such activities to the public.
  • Attends seminars, workshops, and other meetings for professional development.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: College Expectations. Dependability, attendance, punctuality, and a commitment to do the job right are essential at all times.
  • Reports to work on time, at appropriate workstation or department during all departmental/position scheduled work days and during all departmental/position scheduled work hours.
  • Understands that failure to report for work and/or reporting late without prior approval are unacceptable practices and will result in disciplinary action.
  • Performs a productive full day’s work.
  • Ensures that service to students and the general public is top priority.
  • Demonstrates a considerate, friendly, respectful and constructive attitude toward fellow employees and students.
  • Adheres to all College and System policies and procedures.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

 

  • Current employee of Wallace Community College is required.
  • Master's degree from an accredited college is required.
  • Two years’ experience working with low-income, first-generation clientele in a secondary or postsecondary educational setting is required.
  • Ability to work nonstandard hours specifically evenings and weekends is required.
  • Current and valid driver's license with the ability to frequently travel to attend events and activities is required.
ADVISORY COMMITTEE: The President will appoint an Advisory and Interview Committee to include representatives of the College faculty and staff. This committee will employ appropriate procedures, including the review of application packets, interviews, and demonstration of competency, to determine which applicants are to be recommended to the President for further consideration. From all the applications received, an advisory committee will select the applicants to be interviewed.

Applicants must travel at their own expense for interviews that are conducted in person.
