McNeese State University invites qualified applicants and nominations for the position of Dean in the College of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics (CSEM). This is a full-time, 12-month, unclassified administrative position. The appointment is available immediately. 

Reporting Authority: Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs and Enrollment Management. The position is appointed by the President of the University and the appointment is approved by the Board of Supervision of the University of Louisiana System. 

The College: The College of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics is one of six colleges that comprise the university and has approximately 60 FTE faculty members distributed across five academic departments: biology, chemistry and physics, electrical engineering and computer science, chemical, civil, and mechanical engineering and mathematics. Together the departments enroll over 1,000 undergraduate majors and 75 graduate students. 

The University: McNeese State University, founded in 1939, has approximately 7,500 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students. It offers graduate degrees across a range of disciplines including business, education, engineering, English, creative writing, music education, and nursing. Located in a culturally diverse area with a population of more than 180,000 (Lake Charles and suburbs), the campus encompasses over 386 acres and is conveniently located to serve students from both southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas.

Position Description and Responsibilities: 

The Dean is expected to provide dynamic leadership in teaching, scholarly productivity, and service. The Dean is also expected to stimulate and support collegiality, as well as a productive relationship within the university community and the area business community. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Is appointed by the President of the University and the appointment is approved by the Board of Supervision of the University of Louisiana System.

  • Is responsible to the Provost.

  • Serves as an academic administrator who explains and implements university policies within his or her own college.

  • Supervises development of those policies unique to the college.

  • Coordinates and supervises all activities within the college so that academic excellence will be achieved in those disciplines for which the college is responsible.

  • Promotes a desirable image for the college and university and seeks to develop continuing good relations between the university and the area which it serves.

  • Works with the University Foundation office to assist with fundraising opportunities for the College.

  • Coordinates the activities of department heads toward a unified effort so that goals may be achieved.

  • Supervises, counsels, and encourages department heads in their efforts.

  • Maintains current records and ensures that department heads follow his or her example.

  • In coordination with appropriate college leaders, examines and analyzes both the content and adequacy of his/her college curricula, making certain that curricula and course offerings are current and that the university catalog reflects this fact.

  • Counsels department heads on faculty recruiting, development, and faculty utilization within the framework of the college.

  • Is responsible for fiscal matters of the college.

  • After consulting with department heads, recommends which faculty members in the college are to be promoted, receive merit pay, be granted tenure, or be granted an official leave.

  • In coordination with appropriate college leadership, oversees allotment of space and coordinates maintenance of facilities.

  • Other duties as assigned by Provost.

Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution in a discipline appropriate for the college programs.

  • A minimum of ten years of supervisory and leadership experience, preferably in a large Science, Engineering, or industrial type organization.

  • Experience in improving operations, problem solving, and change management.

  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Evidence of successful supervision of professionals and the ability to work directly with diverse professional groups/disciplines.

  • Proven record of innovativeness and ability to foster teamwork.

  • Knowledge of assessment and continuous improvement processes.

  • Commitment to fostering a student-centered learning community.

  • Demonstrated evidence of increasingly complex managerial experiences with the ability to manage substantive and rapid growth.

  • A record of outstanding administrative leadership roles and a collaborative management style that fosters trust, respect, and successful working relationships with students, staff deans, administrators, industry partners and community.

  • Ability to promote excellence in teaching, scholarship, and professional activity in the College.

  • Ability to resolve complex personnel issues.

  • Ability to work with community and industry partners to enhance the educational experience for our students from a local to global perspective.

  • A vision consistent with the strategic plans/goals of the College and University.

  • Experience and ability to convey his/her vision to move the College forward in cooperation with senior leadership within the College.

  • Familiar with Science, Engineering, and Mathematics accreditation process.
