Position Summary | The fundamental connection between coagulation system dysregulation and malignancy has been recognized for over 150 years. A prime example of this connection is pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), which has the highest risk of cancer-associated thrombosis and has one of the highest mortality rates of all cancers. PDAC will soon be the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. An NIH-funded postdoctoral position is available in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in the laboratory of Dr. Matthew Flick at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Flick Lab is part of UNC’s internationally-recognized Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and the newly formed UNC Blood Research Center. Research in the Flick Lab focuses on cellular, biochemical, and biophysical mechanisms by which blood coagulation and fibrinolytic factors contribute to inflammatory, infectious, and malignant disease. The successful applicant will study (patho)physiologic mechanisms that mediate pancreatic cancer progression and associated thrombosis, including cellular/molecular pathways and modifying activities that influence the tumor and thrombotic phenotypes associated with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma disease. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | Ph.D. in the biological sciences, such as molecular or cellular biology, biochemistry, clinical or medical laboratory science, pharmacology, or related areas, or an equivalent professional degree such as an MD, DO, or DVM. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Candidates must have high initiative and enthusiasm for research, exceptional organizational skills, and strong oral and written communication skills. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Experience in cancer biology or coagulation research is strongly preferred. Prior research experience with animal models of hemostasis, thrombosis, or cancer. Prior experience with scientific writing (published, peer-reviewed scientific papers). |
