We are seeking a dynamic scholar, educator, and communicator to fill a 9-month non-tenure-accruing research assistant professor position that will include research (80%) and teaching (20%), with overarching goal of evaluating factors influencing population status and threats for endemic reptiles (e.g., snakes, turtles) in the Nature Coast region of Florida.   Research topics can include identification of critical habitats and habitat loss for reptiles, impacts of human activities (e.g., fishing, harvest, and altered habitats) on reptile population abundance and population viability, and quantification of habitat requirements for reptiles, including those with imperiled population status.   Duties will include: the development of externally funded research grants on reptile ecology; mentor graduate students, and to foster strong collaboration between UF/IFAS and cooperating state and federal management agencies.  The research program is expected to inform ongoing and future monitoring programs for reptiles in the Nature Coast region.   The faculty member is expected to publish results from research on these topics in refereed journals and to contribute to writing proposals for external funding.

The successful candidate will participate actively in undergraduate and graduate education by chairing and serving on graduate committees; supervising thesis, dissertation and undergraduate research; and publishing research results with students. Teaching duties will include an annual assignment of 4 credits of undergraduate teaching in the Wildlife Ecology and Conservation major, including such classes as Wildlife Ecology and Management, Wildlife of Florida, or Wildlife Techniques. Faculty are encouraged to participate in professional development activities related to teaching and advising and may teach courses and seminars. The successful candidate will be expected to partially support their salary by obtaining external funding.

Minimum Requirements:

A doctorate (foreign equivalent acceptable) in wildlife ecology or a closely related discipline is required.  Candidates should have demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication, interpersonal relationships, and procurement of extramural funding.   Strong quantitative skills are desired, including reptile population dynamics and estimation of vital rates (growth, survival and recruitment). Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system.  Candidates must also have a commitment to IFAS core values of excellence, diversity, global involvement, and accountability.

Preferred Qualifications:

Postdoctoral experience is desirable.
