Summary

The Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR) is the home of the University of Michigan?s Clinical and Translational Science Award from the National Institutes of Health. MICHR is part of a national, collaborative consortium that is focused on bringing more treatments to all patients more quickly by advancing clinical and translational science (CTS). The field of CTS aims to build an evidence base of scientific and operational approaches that improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and impact of translational research across a range of diseases and conditions. MICHR has the unique charge of examining the translational research ecosystem at a systems level to determine where common pitfalls exist; developing novel solutions to these challenges; demonstrating their effectiveness; and disseminating improvements widely. MICHR is a dynamic organization that serves as a hub of innovation and experimentation to advance research in the science of translation and accelerate the realization of interventions that improve human health.

MICHR is seeking an experienced program manager to serve as a Community Engagement Program Manager for the Community Engagement (CE) Program which is a singular unit within the Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR). The CE program supports and encourages research approaches that engage both community and academic partners.

Responsibilities*

Michigan Communities Reviewing Research for Equity  (MI-CORRE)

  • Support faculty and community partners to implement activities as they relate to developing a statewide group that reviews research for equity, the Michigan Communities Reviewing Research for Equity (MI-CORRE).
  • Support leadership on coordinating day-to-day activities, achieving goals, expected outcomes and progress with the project.
  • Implement a literature review around engaging community partners in research review.
  • Create strategy for qualitative interviews of key expert partners across the country.
  • Facilitate qualitative interviews.
  • Implement plan for qualitative data collection and analysis.
  • Manage the budget for this project and support processing of invoices related to MI-CORRE.
  • Develop benchmarks for this work as it supports translational science.
  • Help guide the development of MI-CORRE.
  • Serve as liaison between community and academic partner organizations.
  • Coordinate communication, meetings and logistics once MI-CORRE is seated.

Communications

  • Support the CE Program with communication needs including flyer development, communication plans, Facebook ads, video posting, email campaigns, design, web development, event planning, etc.
  • Work with dissemination grantees to support their communication needs.
  • Provide consults around communication and dissemination of community engaged research teams.
  • Work with MICHR Communications Team to market CE services and stories of impact.
  • Manage CE Bridges, CE?s monthly newsletter listserv, including adding and deleting emails, creating stories, and designing newsletter.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate campaigns promoting CE in the news.
  • Host dissemination consultations with community-academic study teams.

General Support

  • Support and facilitate CE Studio service to engage community experts in research.
  • Work with evaluation liaison within CE to demonstrate and measure the impact the science of CE with a focus on advancing the dissemination of translational science at MICHR using continuous quality improvement approaches and evaluation methods. 
  • Connects to a variety of community-based organizations (CBO), understand the health priorities of partner organizations, policymakers, and members of the community, and regularly participate in at least one local community-based coalition or group.
  • Encourages CBOs to engage in new research opportunities as they arise, often in response to new funding opportunities, and to utilize MICHR services when appropriate.
  • Provide reporting language and metrics for UM and federal reporting requirements.
  • Writes for academic and community contexts working collaboratively to develop manuscripts, abstracts, and other dissemination materials.

Required Qualifications*

  • Master's degree or Bachelor's degree with equivalent experience required in a relevant field
  • Experience with community engaged, community-based and community based participatory research; facilitating/convening processes, and community based/community-university multidisciplinary partnerships.
  • Experience with engaging with community advisory boards.
  • Strong writing and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong initiative and demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaborative settings is essential.
  • Familiarity with broader impacts/societal impacts/community engagement and the importance of DEIA to the research community.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience in qualitative research data collection methods.
  • Experience in dissemination activities for community-engaged research projects.
  • Demonstrates strengths in networking and relationship building, knowledge of consensus decision-making processes, and understanding of the specific cultural context in their respective community environments.
  • Demonstrates involvement in community-based work in their community or areas of focus and are able to offer insight into the barriers that separate the scientific community from the public.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
