Summary

A full-time Research Laboratory Specialist Intermediate is sought to assist in the labs of Associate Professor Alison Davis Rabosky and Professor Dan Rabosky in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Michigan. The specialist will be supporting high-level processing, analysis, interpretation, and management of 3D morphological data generated in the Biodiversity Imaging Facility within the Museum of Zoology (UMMZ). In addition to deep expertise in comparative morphology, the specialist should have strong interpersonal skills and will serve as a functional supervisor to staff and students working in the Biodiversity Imaging Facility.  

The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology embraces education and research on virtually all aspects of biodiversity, including:

Responsibilities*

  • Supervision of the operation of the UMMZ micro-CT laboratory and micro-CT laboratory technician. Maintains communication with third party vendors, in particular metrology equipment manufacturers, 3D visualizations software developers, and computing specialists/IT in addition to the CT lab technician. (20%)
  • Develops, designs, and conducts micro-CT based morphological research projects in line with on-going research interests of the Davis Rabosky and Rabosky laboratories and collaborates with other UMMZ community members. (20%)
  • Coordinates data collection and screening and verifies the data. Conducts analysis of data, interprets and implements research methodology based on outcome of analysis. (20%)
  • Conducts on-boarding of new personnel (students and postdocs) in the micro-CT research group by conducting training sessions for 3D data analysis and management. (10%)
  •  Trains users in equipment operation and computational techniques, explains and demonstrates technology and equipment capabilities, operations, limitations and outcomes. (10%)
  • Co-authors publications and may co-present results with Principal Investigator at meetings and/or conferences. (10%)
  • Engages in museum outreach activities, such as coordinating the creation of 3D prints, 3D renders, videos, and social media for the general public and in-person public engagement events. (5%)
  • Occasional direct operation of the UMMZ micro-CT scanner. (5%)

Required Qualifications*

Required: Master's degree or higher and 4 or more years of experience in museum specimen-based research, micro-CT analysis, CT data management, 3D visualizations of anatomy and morphology, undergraduate research supervision, and laboratory management experience. Applicants should have at least one co-authored publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

This is a term-limited appointment for three years.
