We have an opening for a Financial Aid Counselor at our Dyersburg State campus!

 General Description:

              This position manages the Federal Pell Grant and Direct Loan Programs, and serves as the institution’s Primary Destination point Administrator for all federal electronic access.

 Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Evaluates each institutional customer student loan request, interprets and applies federal and other regulations and policies to determine eligibility, researches the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) on the particular applicant in order to make an independent qualification determination.

  • Awards and balances the Federal Pell Grant and Direct Loan Program ensuring that all federal expenditure requirements are met.

  • Performs monthly reconciliations with the federal Common Origination and Disbursement record system.

  • In collaboration with the Director, updates direct lending policies and procedures annually to assure compliance with TBR and DSCC policies.

  • Approves loan correspondence and loan amounts prior to student notification.

  • Monitors direct loan funds to ensure that funds are not over or under-awarded.

  • Verifies files and packages awards according to institutional policies.

  • Coordinates outside resources with financial aid package.

  • Analyzes files for situations that may call for professional judgment decisions.

  • Provides financial aid information to students, parents and other clientele.

  • Counsels students regarding budgeting, loan management, satisfactory academic progress or other special circumstances.

  • Performs R2T4 calculations for students who withdraw and return federal funds as necessary. Establishes and sets all parameters in the federal software for calculating returns and analyzes the data to ensure compliance.

  • Resolves student problems, seeking another authority if necessary.

  • Provides quality service to achieve customer satisfaction by promptly responding to student inquiries.

  • Efficiently operate a personal computer and associated software (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.) and SungardHE Banner.

  • Participate in various activities held on and off-campus such as New Student Orientation and FAFSA Fever workshops.

  • Maintain files accurately, in paper and electronic form.

  • Handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Problem-solve difficult situations.

  • Assist the Director with ongoing projects.

  • Serve as backup for TSAA administration.

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.  

Working Conditions:

 Sedentary: Desk work; occasional travel may be required for college or program activities. Insignificant effort other than normal movement.  Minimal Hazard/Exposure: Standard office settings. At least minimal environmental controls to assure health and comfort.

 Required Qualifications: 

  • Ability to communicate effectively, accurately, and appropriately, verbally and in writing

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.

  • Ability to interact in an effective and appropriate manner with diverse populations, the DSCC community and the public.

  • Knowledgeable of how to efficiently organize, make decisions, prioritize multiple tasks, meet deadlines and work independently and as a team player within a highly computerized environment and with frequent daily interruptions.

  • Ability to provide quality service to achieve customer satisfaction by working files quickly and accurately.

  • Must possess excellent analytical skills. 

Minimum Requirements of Education and Experience:

 Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Accounting or Business Management from a regionally accredited institution.

 Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Two years’ experience in a college financial aid and/or scholarship environment.

  • Familiarity with SungardHE Banner Student Information System.
