Research Associate

Job Description


The UVA Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics invites applications for two postdoc positions in the Laboratory of Dr. Hui-wang Ai: https://med.virginia.edu/ai-lab/ .

This lab uses interdisciplinary approaches in chemical biology, molecular engineering, and imaging to study and manipulate complex biological systems, with a focus on developing novel molecular indicators to peer into cells and organisms to understand mechanisms.

Postdoctoral employment is temporary and is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years1 and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University.

Employment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate is viewed as training and is preparatory for a full-time academic or research career, is supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship during the training period.

The first postdoctoral researcher will develop genetically encoded biosensors for fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) and apply the sensors to study oxidative stress and kinase signaling. Previous expertise in protein engineering, molecular cloning, plasmid construction, and mammalian cell culture is required. Additional skills in protein purification, fluorescence microscopy, western blotting, SDS-PAGE, and gene editing are preferred.

Another postdoctoral researcher will develop self-wellness alert devices. Previous expertise in electrochemical biosensors is required. Additional skills in plasmid construction, protein purification, and molecular cloning are preferred.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Full-time research or scholarship at the University.

  • Preparatory for a full-time academic or research career

  • Supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship

  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Doctoral degree

At the Research Associate level this is a 12-month appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding.
