Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Director of Communications for Academic Affairs is responsible for elevating the University of Maryland’s reputation as a vibrant, dynamic and diverse academic community of scholars, learners and teachers. This position provides strategic communications support to the Office of the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. As a member of the Office of Marketing and Communications, this position reports to the Chief Communications Officer, with a dotted line to the Provost.

The Division of Academic Affairs works to pursue excellence in teaching, research, scholarship, creative activities, service, community engagement and student success – all elements of the values and mission stated in the University Strategic Plan. The Director will develop and execute an integrated plan for national and local media outreach, campus communications, digital media, social media, and marketing in support of the university’s academic mission. This position will support the Provost in writing remarks for events and pitching the Provost to speak at national conferences and podium opportunities. This position will also work with colleagues in the Office of Marketing and Communications and academic units across campus on messaging and communications activities in support of the University of Maryland Strategic Plan: Fearlessly Forward.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education (include licenses, certification, etc.):
BA or BS degree in related field.

Experience:
Minimum of six (6) years of relevant experience in communications.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Specialized skills:
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Experience working with the media.
  • Detailed-oriented with strong project management skills.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and implementing communications strategies.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team environment with multiple stakeholders, while meeting deadlines and maintaining high-quality work.

Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Must have the ability to lift and small carry parcels, packages and other items, to walk short distances, and drive a vehicle to deliver and pick up materials.
