Overview
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Laboratory Researcher III for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences (SEBS). Reporting to the Research Project Manager Supervisor, this position will provide laboratory, field, and technical support for the real-time operation of the Rutgers University Center for Ocean Observing Leadership (RUCOOL).
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Perform the maintenance, test calibration, and ensure operation of the high frequency (HF) radar systems distributed along the Atlantic Coast and worldwide.
  • This position may involve travel, the ability to work autonomously, adapt, and make pertinent/autonomous decisions in the field.
  • Oversee the continuous operation of the regional HF radar network with limited direct supervision. This includes responding to issues during evening, weekend, and holiday hours when needed.
  • Responsible for knowing when routine or semi-routine work on the HF radar data stream is needed and how to complete that work independently.
  • Responsible for setting their own daily goals and work priorities and communicating those objectives to the Project Manager.
  • Helps develop and improve standard practices and procedures for the unit.
  • Work independently with municipal, state, and federal authorities to identify and increase the number of research sites available to the unit for operating HF radar systems.
  • Work is frequently accomplished outside of Rutgers University property and will present for regular summaries of the work they have completed. Data collected by these instruments has expanded beyond research, education and outreach to the general public to include applications funded through the Office of Naval Research (ONR), Department of Defense (DoD), and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), along with providing real-time data to the U.S. Coast Guard to assist in search and rescue operations.
  • Analyze raw data to ensure accurate and proper operation of the HF systems.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelors Degree preferably in Oceanography (or related field); or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience; or a Masters in Oceanography .
Certifications/Licenses
  • Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver’s license would be required for this position.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must be familiar with oceanographic equipment and Python.
  • The candidate should have experience with ERDDAP, THREDDS, and have worked with NetCDF datasets.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Preference is given to candidates who have experience in supporting large field expeditions.
  • MatLab experience is a plus.
  • Experience working with ocean instrumentation and Python scientific libraries.
Equipment Utilized
  • CODAR HF-Radar, Teledyne Webb Slocum Gliders
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Must be willing to conduct research in remote field camps.
  • Travel may be required in the Mid-Atlantic Bight, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, and potentially Antarctica.

  • This is a 100% grant-funded full-time position, employment in this position is contingent upon the availability of funds.
