Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Under the direction of the Laboratory Safety Manager, the Industrial Hygienist II will play a key role in supporting the existing Laboratory Safety and Chemical Hygiene Programs to increase compliance in research areas. This role provides technical industrial hygiene support and chemical safety expertise to the Laboratory Safety Group for the purposes of evaluating and selecting controls to prevent hazardous exposures in research environments.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: (include licenses, certification, etc.):
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience:
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in industrial hygiene and/or health and safety programs. Relevant advanced degree can be substituted for up to (2) two years of experience.
  • Practical experience in and knowledge of health and safety programs and following incident response procedures.
  • Experience independently conducting hazard assessments.
  • Experience presenting effective training programs and high-quality presentations.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 
This position requires substantial knowledge and practical experience in implementing safety & health programs in the laboratory and/or facilities environment and substantial understanding of relevant regulations, standards, and best practices. Incumbentsl must:
  • Possess substantial knowledge of current research safety practices and control measures to address health risks associated with hazardous chemical substances and physical hazards.
  • Possess substantial knowledge of federal, state, and local health and safety regulations that affect research environments.
  • Possess strong written and oral communication skills and be able to work with institutional staff at all levels.
  • Have the ability to learn complex technical processes and procedures.
  • Competence in computing skills needed to work effectively in Google Suite applications and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access and Powerpoint).
  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently, prioritize work flow and goals under general direction of a manager and work on multiple tasks without sacrificing quality.

 Must possess and maintain a valid MAryland driver’s license or equivalent. 

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Masters degree in field of environmental health and safety, industrial hygiene, chemistry or other STEM discipline.
  • Possession of professional certification/credentials in environmental health and safety field such as Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Certified Chemical Hygiene Officer (CCHO), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
  • Experience working in a research environment.
  • Practical experience working with web-based safety management systems is preferred.
  • Practical experience in health and safety programs at a university research institution is preferred.

Physical Demands

  • Must be capable of working in extreme temperatures and environments that are uncomfortable and that present potential health risks if appropriate protections are not utilized.
  • Must pass an annual physical examination to utilize protective equipment, including respiratory protection.
  •  Must be capable of lifting equipment and materials up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Will be required to occasionally work off-hours and be subject to 24 hour on-call capacity to respond to and investigate incidents involving hazardous material.
