Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Andrew Broadbent, DVM, PhD, in the department of Animal and Avian Sciences at the University of Maryland (UMD), College Park, is recruiting a Faculty Assistant to join his lab, which focuses on avian viruses of economic importance to the poultry industry, and to public health. We are seeking a highly motivated and driven individual to conduct laboratory research, provide bench-supervision to students, maintain and titrate stocks of viruses, manage the ordering of laboratory supplies, arrange equipment servicing, and keep track of laboratory budgets. The laboratory research will aim to develop chicken primary respiratory airway epithelial cell cultures at the air-liquid interface (ALI), and define how viruses, for example avian influenza viruses (AIVs) replicate and evolve in the cultures. The successful candidate will both work independently, and also liaise with other team members, and will report directly to Dr Broadbent. This will involve: collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data, contributing to the development of new techniques and methods, ordering laboratory supplies, managing laboratory budgets, organizing equipment servicing, contributing to meetings and discussions, presenting data, and generating high impact research publications. The position would be ideal for someone seeking a PhD position in the future, and will arm them with a wealth of relevant experience and expertise.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Bachelor of Science degree, or equivalent degree.

Experience:
Some laboratory experience in a relevant field.

Experience with virology, cell culture, and in vivo animal studies of infection and immunity are highly desirable, as are evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills, networking skills, and the ability to work as part of a team, and plan their own work and objectives independently.

Physical Demands

This position requires the lifting and moving of moderately weighted goods (20-50 lbs., for example, Centrifuge Rotors) up to 25 feet, operating tissue culture cells or zebrafish tanks, and utilizing hazardous chemicals, radioisotopes, and compressed gases. While performing the duties within this job, the employee frequently is required to maneuver, handle, or feel objects, tools, or instrument controls. The position also requires prolonged periods of standing to include maneuvering obstacles which may require stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling and accessing necessary tools and objects. Furthermore, the employee is regularly required to operate a computer.

To operate specific lab equipment, the employee must utilize devices and make observations from diverse angles of perception: adjusting exploratory and imaging devices as needed. Employees may work in conditions with fluctuating temperatures: including spaces up to 83 F for extended periods.
