The primary purpose of this role is to provide high quality daily care and maintenance of fish used in research by the Insco Lab within the Zebrafish Facility at DFCI. We are seeking an organized and curious team member who is motivated to contribute to cancer research using zebrafish. Prior zebrafish experience is a plus but not required.

This role offers an unusual opportunity to contribute to the early stages of an exciting new laboratory at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The Insco Lab is pursuing cutting-edge research to discover new treatments for melanoma patients.   • Feeds populations of fish the proper type and amount of food, depending on life stage and experimental application.
  • Operates sophisticated recirculating aquaculture systems, as well as aquatics tank washers, and integrated electronic water quality monitoring systems, all observing standard operating procedures and safety guidelines.??
  • Performs and records daily animal health and welfare observations, communicating adverse findings to the appropriate Postdoctoral Zebrafish Representative (PZR).
  • Performs daily oversight and operation of aquaculture systems and communicates any problems to the Postdoctoral Zebrafish Representative (PZR).
  • Performs various husbandry tasks, including spawning, in-vitro fertilization, and other procedures that involve the handing of fish.
  • Directs husbandry maintenance of key shared lines via husbandry and genotyping.
  • Maintains the facility per IACUC and AAALAC requirements and coordinates preparation for inspections.
  • Keeps zebrafish standard operating protocols up-to-date
  • Contributes to outreach involving the role of zebrafish as animal models of human disease.
  • Maintains live invertebrate cultures for feeding larval fish.
  • Performs and records all water quality testing.
  • Provides training on practices and procedures to new employees and scientific staff.
  • Monitors and optimizes supply needs and orders needed items in timely manner.
  • Other tasks, based on scientific or operational needs, will be directed by the PZR or PI.??

  • Work requires the knowledge of theories, principles, and concepts typically acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree in Biology or a closely related field, or 2-3 years of experience working in an aquaculture environment.
  • Work requires the analytical skills to identify highly complex problems requiring the application of clinical, scientific or technical principles, theories and concepts and in???depth, cross???functional experienced???based knowledge.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with people from a wide variety of social and educational backgrounds.
  • Work requires excellent communication skills and the ability to interface effectively with scientific staff, ARP staff, hospital engineering, and service/equipment vendors.??
