Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Technician to conduct basic and translational research in the field of oncology. Research Technician will work in Dr. Nikhil Munshi’s laboratory in the Jerome Lipper Multiple Myeloma center at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The Munshi Lab’s research studies focus on multiple myeloma and has transformed myeloma therapy and patient survival over the last decades through the identification and validation of therapeutic targets in tumor cells and bone marrow microenvironment.

Current projects include studies on novel molecular mechanisms underlying myeloma pathogenesis and RNA-based approaches for the treatment of myeloma.
The technician will be an integral member of our research team and will assist scientists in performing scientific research, development and/or clinical tasks of varying complexity, including set-up and monitoring experiments, making observations, calculating and recording results.

Responsibilities

The role of the Research Technician is very important and critical in the flow of the laboratory’s research. Previous lab experience is encouraged as the candidate will be expected to independently carry out essential research functions in the laboratory that will include, but are not limited to:

• Cell culture
• Western blot analysis (immuno-precipitations and immunoblotting)
• RNA/DNA extractions, PCR and RT-PCR
• Transient transfection and lentiviral transduction
• Performing cytotoxicity and proliferation assays
• Flow cytometry assays and experience with analysis (DIVA, FLOW-JO) is preferred.
• Assisting research fellows with various next-generation sequencing experiments using multiple myeloma cell lines and patient samples
• Attending lab meetings and actively participates in communicating updates on sample intake for various protocols
• Maintaining accurate electronic and physical sample inventories

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

No supervisory responsibilities.  Normally receives general instructions on routine work, detailed instructions on new projects or assignments.

  • Bachelor’s Degree required with a major in biology or chemistry preferred.
  • Typically requires a minimum of 1-4 years related experience.
  • Developing technical expertise, applies Institute policies and procedures to resolve a variety of issues.
  • Works on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.
  • Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Knowledge of information and techniques related to either biology, chemistry, or medicine is preferred.
  • Must have excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and be able to work with a wide variety of faculty and staff.
  • Ability to analyze information and use logic to address work-related issues and problems.
  • Must have attention to detail and be thorough in completing work tasks.
  • Ability to work within a team environment.
