Post Doctoral Scholar supports general laboratory activities at the Emerging Infectious Disease Ecology Laboratory project on pathogenesis; assists in evaluating bacterial colonization of leaves and seeds in plants such as carrot, tomato and others; provides expertise in visualizing pathogen multiplication in host tissue, carrot cultivation and pathogen genomics; conducts experiments to monitor disease progress of bacteria on plants; assists in harvesting and processing of infected plant samples including grinding, dilution plating, DNA/RNA extraction and PCR; clones and mutates bacterial genes of interest; supports the laboratory by some general laboratory activities such as purchasing research materials; supervises one or more undergraduate and/or graduate student assistants for their research activities; participates in general laboratory activities and organizing such as laboratory meetings, preparing growth media, growing plants, bleaching and cleaning plant growth materials, and washing and sterilizing laboratory glass and plasticware; maintains laboratory records and databases of datasets, strains, primers, and plasmids; analyzes and writes presentations of the resulting data; requires FBI screening for Select Agent pathogen registration, which will eventually include carrying out appropriate researcher and biosafety training; keeps in compliance with university chemical and biological safely regulations; maintains current standard operating protocols; properly disposes of chemical waste; works with Assistant Professor to update the lab's chemical hygiene plan and biological safety protocol.
