    Position description

    The Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System is seeking a candidate for a Project Scientist position. The candidate's research focus will be on pathways of intestinal endotoxin uptake. The candidate will be expected to work alongside Ph.D. research students and postdoctoral fellows from Japan. Accordingly, fluency with spoken and written technical Japanese is required.

    The candidate will work in collaboration with P.I. Jonathan Kaunitz, M.D. Working knowledge of small animal microsurgery, and physiological methods such as Ussing chamber studies is required in addition to standard laboratory techniques such as PCR, immunohistochemistry, gel electrophoresis, and Western blots. Demonstrated proficiency with small animal portal vein and lymphatic duct cannulation and in vivo fluorescence 2-photon confocal endomicroscopy is required. The designing and performing of experiments are expected as well as presenting the results in publications and at national and international meetings.

    The candidate should also be able to successfully run all aspects of a VA-based basic science laboratory including ordering, managing budgets, and dealing with compliance committees including managing IACUC-related documentation, triennial reviews, and all other aspects of regulatory oversight. Proficiency with drafting scientific manuscripts and grant applications is also required. A Ph.D. in Gastrointestinal Physiology is required.
